Oregon youth softball league raffles AR-15 rifle

http://www.kgw.com/news/Youth-softball-league-raffles-AR-15-rifle-199253611.html

ST HELENS, Ore. -- A St. Helens softball league is raising funds by raffling an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

The St. Helens Girls Softball League was hoping to raise more than $3,000 through the raffle, which would be used to maintain fields, buy uniforms and pay for umpires, league officials said.

The winner of the raffle gets the rifle, along with two 30 round magazines. According to the contest rules, the winner must be at least 18 years old and legally allowed to own a firearm. If necessary, the league will pay for the $25 background check.

When asked why the league chose such a potentially controversial fundraiser, St. Helens Girls Softball Association president Devin Degraffenreid explained it was about raising money for a good cause.

I find this sickening.

the young women athletes who comprise the softball league would agree to this raising money tactic, but obviously the grown man who is the President sees this as just another way to raise money.

Thousands of items to potentially raffle, but an assult weapon? Really?

Being an athlete most of my young adult life and being around women athletes, our interests outside of the current sport was rarely ever about guns. I could see us wanting to do car washes, selling candy to raise money.

My point was, the man decided this was a good idea. We have not heard from the young women, we probably may never know what they think.
