Florida Man Adopts girlfriend to Protect His Wealth From Lawsuit

Florida millionaire John Goodman recently adopted his girlfriend so that a family suing him will have access to less of his money. Goodman is being sued by the family of a young man who died after his car was hit by Goodman's car. After the wreck it was learned that Goodman was driving drunk.

At one point the judge in the case ruled that all the money in Goodman's children's trust funds could not be touched to pay out a settlement if Goodman lost the suit. As a result, late last year Goodman adopted his girlfriend. Now his girlfriend is, by law, entitled to one-third of Goodman's wealth. So far Goodman's children have trust funds totaling $200 million.
