Al state Senator Thinks Increasing Teacher Pay Goes Against A ‘Biblical Principle’

http://thinkprogress.org/education/2012/02/01/416446/alabama-teacher-bible-teacher-pay/

According to Alabama state Sen. Shadrack McGill (R), the Bible says that increasing teacher salaries would only lead to less-qualified teachers. McGill said at a prayer breakfast that doubling teachers’ salaries — starting pay for Alabama teachers begins at $36,144 — would not help education. In fact, he said that keeping teacher pay low is a “Biblical principle“:

“If you double a teacher’s pay scale, you’ll attract people who aren’t called to teach.

What's next not giving min wage workers a raise because the bible believed at one time every person had HIS place and to give people more money would make them forget their place?

His next move might be to drastically decrease the salaries that are paid to teachers, since - according to his logic - the calling would have to be stronger for a teacher to remain a teacher, and, thus - by his logic - the quality of teaching would be improved.

His salary should be reduced drastically enough so that his calling to "public service" may be confirmed.

If we pay teachers decently, a lot of people will go into teaching for the money, just like they go into medicine, law, politics, and banking for that reason. Of course, by this reasoning, we should lower the salaries for doctors, so only those with a passion for healing will go into medicine will become MDs; likewise for law, so only those with a passion for justice will pursue it; and likewise for politicians, so that only those with an interest in public service will go into this field. We can't do that for the CEO's of banks, however, because then they all go into other forms of crime and probably make the country even less safe than it already is <sarcasm>.
