Our town "beat" Walmart!

http://www.northjersey.com/news/198988111_Walmart_backs_out_of_plans_for_a_supermarket_in_Hawthorne.html

Walmart will not move forward with plans to open a neighborhood market in Hawthorne, according to a representative.

-snip-

The plans for the supermarket-only Walmart, which would have been the first of its kind in New Jersey, included four other tenants over 51,180 square feet of the 8.67 acres at 204 Wagaraw Road. Plans included 253 parking spaces and the supermarket was also expected to have a drive-thru pharmacy. The property is the former site of Merck & Co.'s Metasol industrial plant, which has been vacant for six years.

Hawthorne Deserves Better was against Walmart coming into town because the group said it was a poor fit for the community and felt that the brand would lower property values, overwhelm Wagaraw Road with traffic and the threaten the viability of the downtown business district.

"Hundreds of Hawthorne residents stood together and said no, we won't settle. We deserve better," said President of Hawthorne Deserves Better Joe Osborne. "Now the work begins to bring smart development to Wagaraw Road that will raise our property values rather than hurt them, that will preserve the safe and small town community that we love, and that will benefit our small businesses rather than eliminate them. This is proof that ordinary citizens can make a difference, even when fighting an opponent as intimidating as Walmart. I love this town and I thank everyone who worked so hard for this amazing result."

If a community doesn't want a thing like Wal-Mart, it shouldn't have to have it. Some kinds of NIMBYism are perfectly fine.
