Is there ever a time and a place for violence ?
It's my belief that if you verbally scold someone they will forget about it five minutes later , but smash them in the mouth and split their lip and they will remember it for the rest of their lives

Or will they just be over the top angry at you?

He who fights with monsters should be careful lest he thereby become a monster. ~Friedrich Nietzsche, Beyond Good and Evi
Nonviolence means avoiding not only external physical violence but also internal violence of spirit. You not only refuse to shoot a man, but you refuse to hate him. ~Martin Luther King, Jr.
Force is all-conquering, but its victories are short-lived. ~Abraham Lincoln
Violence in the voice is often only the death rattle of reason in the throat. ~John Frederick Boyes

(624 posts)How can Martin Luther King say violence is not the answer when he's living in a country that was born of violence ?
Without violence we would not have the nation we have today

(2,966 posts)Nietzsche cautions the violent, not against violence. King? Gun owner for self preservation. Lincoln? Civil War. Boyes I don't know. No way to get around violence when violence is part of nature.

(692 posts)Of course when you make these two statements mean the same thing, you're not being honest:
Violence has its place, of course, like when the Redcoats are coming or punks are off wilding through Gotham Park. But if we hope for a civil society, it makes little sense to casually go about contributing to the social tolerance level of incivility.
As Martin Luther King pointed out in the 1960s: violent resistence will justify violent responses by the forces of oppression in this world. But nonviolence under the same provocation, will only expose the opressor as a force for evil.
But why stop at a busted lip? If you rip their fingernails out, they will also remember your statement. Or what if you rip their puppy's tail off while making some casual observation? Would that not help drive home your point? Perhaps next time a friend invites me to the opera or asks me over to an elegant birthday party for a coworker, I'll drive a red-hot poker through my eyeball and hang a little flag on the throbbing skewer that reads, "Don't forget: La Traviatta on Thursday with Vicki." Then I shan't miss a true evening to remember.
"violent resistence will justify violent responses by the forces of oppression in this world. But nonviolence under the same provocation, will only expose the opressor as a force for evil"

(24,331 posts)When you have a horde of Nazis marching across Europe, no amount of moral superiority is going to stop that, but shitload of M1 rifles probably will. When someone's mugging you, or invading your home, or threatening you with rape, the only reasonable answer is to end the threat.
As the answer to political disagreement, violence is somewhat lacking.

(624 posts)All Americans would have to , how could you sit in our nation enjoying these freedoms when it was all born of violence , and still claim violence is never the answer
That would make you a hypocrite
Take a bow, you must be teaching your kids that this nation should've never declared independence and fought for it and should've never been united during the Civil War

(10,602 posts)If you look at all the initiatives from the GOP, they are using policy to engage in all sorts of economic and cultural violence. They are also pursuing election fraud for 2012. They are actively and viciously covertly and overtly taking away the votes of Democrats, the elderly, the poor, the unemployed, students et al who are likely to vote against them.
Through hate radio they are instigating an incendiary environment with racist, bigotry, hatred and coded language. They are indirectly and even directly calling for elimination of liberalism and pushing even physical violence. Meanwhile they are having people arrested, beaten and detained if they even threaten to speak up as happened in that hearing today.
They are the violent ones. At some point a counterattack will happen and a Republican will get hurt by someone. That is because they are stoking the fire more and more every day.
The Syrian people started out with peaceful demonstrations and have been killed in the thousands. Now they are fighting back. There will be a time when one of these assholes will get their bigoted and racists asses beaten to a pulp by someone. And they will well deserve it. Even though I do not condone violence, I am afraid it will happen.
Gabby Giffords was shot because of all the hatefull rhetoric. The GOP caused it as far as I am concerned.
I am a Vietnam veteran. If I were in the military today I would NOT defend a Republican politician from harm.
