Firefighters fulfill child’s Make-A-Wish

Rio Rancho firefighters helped a sick little girl’s wish come true last week.

Working with Make-A-Wish New Mexico on Thursday and Friday, about a dozen firefighters built a play structure for 5-year-old Rio Rancho resident Maryann Grending, who’s undergoing treatment for leukemia. Make-A-Wish grants wishes for children 2 ½ to 18 years old who have life-threatening medical problems.

“These guys have just gone above and beyond in working with these families and volunteering their time,” said Make- A-Wish New Mexico program manager Jamie Schwebach.

Rio Rancho firefighters have now done two projects with the organization, the first helping with another playground for a 6-year-old Albuquerque girl, Beverly, last fall. Schwebach said the firefighters not only finished the Rio Rancho project in half the expected time, but took time to interact with the children and their families.
