Prez Follows Through On Promise to Jennifer 'Do a little Jig' Wedel - Won't Promise Her Vote, Though

Two days after Obama talked with Wedel during an online town hall and offered to take a look at her unemployed husband's resume, Wedel says the president has followed through.

Wedel tells The Associated Press she got a call from a White House official who told her Obama made a point of making sure the matter was taken care of and that the resume was sent to contacts in the couple's Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Now Wedel's husband has been contacted by several recruiters, and Wedel says she's grateful.

But Wedel, a Republican, says that may not be enough to get her vote unless Obama also improves some of his job policies.

I don't know how her overt racism and idiotic claims about her husband (which of course Obama saw right through) weren't obvious.

I find numerous references to this with expressions of disbelief. But the majority of the criticisms have been short and muted, as far as I've read. Many of the news reports recall the exchange, but don't seem to presume to know how to address it. There's certainly room for Wedel to claim that she was just making an innocent and innocuous joke; especially since the Prez let her off of the hook with his skillful directing of the conversation.

I really think that most folks are clueless about the origins of the phrase as it relates to blacks. Many are thinking of an Irish dance.

I would, however, agree that it should be clear that her questioning fell along the lines of those in the Tea Party and elsewhere in the conservative crowd that there's something about our immigration policies which is holding them back from finding work. Supposedly, 'foreigners' are getting jobs ahead of them, by some government design. It's a familiar argument of the republican opposition which, I'm sure, the President recognized on its face. That's why I believe he offered to take her husband's resume; to make clear that her complaint was a wrongheaded notion which could be easily refuted.

...anyone believe a progressive would frame the argument in that way?

There isn't a lot of deeper discussion of the remarks that I have seen, though, that make that sort of comparison of what one would normally say if they had a different political affinity.

I really wish I could find something more substantive to post or refer to, but the majority of the criticisms I've read have been summary and surprisingly tentative.

I guess you're right, that most people didn't see the racism. I don't know how though. When you go on to say 'sing us a song'... a command, not a request... that just screams at me. I found it downright stomach-turning.

But you're right... just the framing of the questioning should have been enough. I'm glad it's being shot down and that those who cheered for her yesterday seem to have caught a clue. It still ticks me off, though. A lot.

everyone to send President Obama their resumes:

I expect the right wingers to shortly do the same in an attempt to embarrass the president.

OTOH, can you imagine him holding a meeting with executives demanding more H1B Visas, and he points out the boxes and boxes of resumes he just happens to have handy?

What is she talking about? Is she referring to his Jobs Bill which the repubs refuse to pass...not his fault....or is she talking about labor laws, in which case what does she want him to do about those? Yesterday she said he got her vote, now today, it's not enough to get her husband a job? This woman is just crazy and it irks me that the President went out of his way to help her and she basically sticks it to him.

As for getting a job. If, back in 2002, when I was unemployed, President Bush had gotten me a job, I would still not vote for his re-election because no matter how many nice things he did for me personally, I would still think that his tax cuts and Iraq war were bad for the country and the world.

I understand the problem with the work visas. They should not be given at this time when there is so much unemployment.

asking her in what way the H1B Visa program was impacting her husband's employment opportunities and whether it was what first led to his termination? It should been about policy and not whether a single individual has a job. Have him send his resume to me is a pretty weak response. What is the President going to do - find jobs for individuals one person at a time?

I think he missed a golden opportunity to bring the H1B Visa discussion to the public.

Now if we can only get someone reporter with half a brain to ask this question in a general election debate. You know a question that states the numbers involved etc.

I think what is not mentioned in this discussion is that, in addition to companies reducing labor cost, the H1B Visa is tied up in international relations with India. They are an important counterweight to both China and Pakistan.

For me I have a simple suggestion for H1B Visa. Eliminate all the crap (the pretending to find American workers) and charge $50K/year for the priviledge of working in this country. Any one can get a work Visa if they or their sponser pays $50K/yr. No worry about posting jobs with narrowly defined requirements and gaming the system. If U.S. engineers cannot compete on that level, then we have more problems than can be imagined. I could be persuaded for a different amount.
