Here's a message that went out to the media early Thursday afternoon from American Airlines spokesman Bruce Hicks:
"This morning Tom Horton, Bev Goulet and Jeff Brundage met with union leaders to outline American's business plan and the necessary steps we must take to secure our future success. A difficult outcome of the restructuring process is our need to reduce our workforce to better align with a more efficient operation. The business plan and our proposals, which are necessary for long-term success, outline a reduction of approximately 13,000 employees across our company. The company will share proposals with the unions this afternoon, however below is an approximate breakdown of expected job reductions by workgroup."
Nearly 9,000 will come from the ranks of the Transport Workers Union, we see.
Fleet Service & Other TWU - Approximately 4,200
Flight Attendants - Approximately 2,300
Management/Support Staff - Approximately 1,400
Mechanics and Related - Approximately 4,600
Pilots - Approximately 400
Total - Approximately 13,000
Still under review are the number of passenger service agents and other employees that might be affected.

(100,076 posts)But nothing pisses me off more than when people justify these bizarre CEO - worker pay ratios that are like 2,145 : 1.

(23,278 posts)DALLAS (TheStreet) -- Bankrupt AMR (AAMRQ.PK) says it will reduce annual costs by more than $2 billion in its Chapter 11 reorganization -- eliminating about 13,000 jobs -- while increasing flying by 20% and annual revenue by $1 billion.
The proposed job cuts, which were scheduled to be outlined to employees on Wednesday, would include 4,600 mechanics and related workers; 4,200 fleet service and other Transport Workers Union members; 2,300 flight attendants; 1,400 management and support staff workers; 400 pilots; and a still undetermined number of agents, customer service representatives and planners, the carrier said.

(3,445 posts)They're doing this for no other reason than "we're not making enough money." The work will still be there, their remaining employees will be double and triple shifted with no increase in compensation. All so their bottom line will look more "golden."
How did the world get this way? It's EVERYWHERE, and I'm goddammed sick of it. It's either lay people off but keep the work and kill your remaining employees or don't hire enough staff to do the jobs and overwork your existing staff.
I think the entire business world is full of crap.
