The reason why Progressive can't make progress in the United States can be summed up by

myopic political correctness.

Look at how people attack Paula Dean, they throw mud at her for one bad wart but ignore all the other good she has done. Paula Dean is a big Jimmy Carter (most underrated President's in U.S. history) fan for those that don't know, and she has worked hard for what she has now. She is an example of a strong, independent woman, and an inspiration to other women in similar situations. Then you have the unwarranted attacks against Weiner (again ignoring all the good Weiner stood for), but of course Gingrich is allowed to be a potential Republican nominee while the progressive left complacently allows this to happen. Now, there are people associating flag burning with flying the Confederate flag? Flag burning is free speech and is no different than putting the flag upside down. Flag Burning is a symbolic gesture of disapproval of national empire building, and the flag being upside down is symbolic of distress. The United States currently operates like an empire and the nation is in distress. Does anyone disagree?

As progressives we can't make progress, and forward thinking if we are bogged down by the rules of the establishment. The goal of the establishment is to conserve the status quo. Conservatism is not only a preservation of the status quo, but an attempt return to the "good old days".

We need to make it clear which side we stand on.

as he may be right about how progressives in this country shoot themselves in the foot all the time. The world outside the U.S. is transforming into a positive energy, and I am jealous. I am jealous of the green initiatives in Europe or how S. America is yearning for positive growth for their own or how much industrialized nations have universal health care. Why can't we have that? Conservatives that oppose these dreams will always be there, but it makes it exponentially more difficult when you have people on our side bogging down such progress.

Can you name one "progressive" who is "shooting themselves in the foot"?

How do you define "progressive"?

Who qualifies?

While not all try to coerce and stifle, there are some who do use the idea of being left as a cover for power. Like the people who said anything who did not vote for hillary/Obama was a sexist/racist.

She just cooks with a lot of butter, cream, etc. which some people find unhealthy, but others don't. After it was reported that she has diabetes, a lot of people blamed her type of cooking for her health problems, but others reported that it has nothing to do with what kind of food she eats. Some people are just hypercritical of everything.

has more to do with your genetics then anything else. If if runs in your family, you can get type 2 more easily. I have type 1. I always have people asking me what I ate to get diabetes. Then I feel like punching them.

Which makes them progressive. You may be thinking of centrists and rightists posing as progressives. Or, calling themselves progressive when criticizing flag burning.

It means "I hate the United States of America".

You can say you are doing it to protest foreign policy, or imperialism, but it means what it means, and people will understand what it means. Just like you can flip somebody off and think that you are saying "I don't like your football team" but the person on the receiving end will get a different message.

To compare a message of "I hate America" to "I am in distress" is quite absurd.

And yes, fine, hate speech is protected speech in the USA, but that does not mean it will play in Peoria any better than pictures of Chairman Mao.
