George Bush Has Painted Over 50 Puppies

After an online hacker got his hands on self-portraits of former President George W. Bush in the shower, Fox News Atlanta tracked down his art teacher, Georgia-based painter Bonnie Flood.

Flood, who spent a month in Florida teaching Bush and his sister, says that the former President is a gifted artist and prolific painter of dogs — apparently, "he's painted over 50 pictures of dogs."

"It's amazing, hes going to go down in the history books as a great artist," she told Fox.

New York Magazine art critic Jerry Saltz—no fan of the president while he was in office—nevertheless had high praise for his paintings.

“These are pictures of someone dissembling without knowing it, unprotected and on display, but split between the promptings of his own inner drives and limited by his abilities,” he wrote. “They reflect the pleasures of disinterestedness. A floater. Inert. The images of a man who saw the entire world from the inside but who finds the smallest, most private place in a private home to imagine his universe.”

Puppies and the one self-portrait I saw (of his back and with his face shown in a small mirror) are exactly what I would expect from Bush. If he tries to draw people in a mature way, no matter how abstract, he risks a tidal wave of self-hatred and shame. It's hard to draw a species you don't really understand, and if he comes to truly understand human beings it will take a harsh awakening.

the usual "Hitler" comparison here:

Hitler started out as a mediocre painter wannabe, then went on to be a dictator.

Well, Bush was a mediocre, wannabe dictator type ... ah ... decider ... who has now become a hack painter. So, history reverses itself!

They do have that in common. We can only wish that both of them had stuck to painting and avoided any involvement in politics. The world would have possibly been a better place.

Oh well.

of the solution to the puzzle. I know I cannot have been alone in seeing his public persona as a facade. His childish traits as an attempt to both fit his father's idea of him and to mock his father at the same time. The Iraq war as a tribute to his father and as a way of showing his father how easily he, the son, could get the US to go there and kill Saddam. And do something his father was afraid to do. And even have most of the blame be placed on Dick Cheney and not sully the Bush family name. Because isn't that what most liberals do? See Cheney as the mastermind and young George W. as an idiot?

I, for one, believe nothing could be further from the truth. It's all there in the paintings. The 2 of himself.

His self-portraits are of someone hiding in a very safe, very clean place. Because he will be neither of those things ever again. He can't look at himself, only parts of himself, because it's too painful to contemplate the whole of what he is and what he has done.

The one in the shower is particularly interesting. Pilots and snipers tend to have lower incidences of PTSD because they have some degree of "viewscreen separation" between themselves and the people they kill.

Here we have Bush using "viewscreen separation" so that he can look at himself... in a mirror... in a painting... and he didn't dare try to paint his own goddamned smirk.

I don't think Bush is hard to read at all. He publicly displayed every single one of the traits necessary for a diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder. Now that he's lost all public respect, to the point where his own party begged him to stay out of the last Presidential race, he certainly fails to receive the level praise and adulation which he constantly demanded as President. His self-esteem is necessarily eroding as he watches a better President slowly undo the damage he caused.

Worst of all for him, he's left alone with his thoughts. Narcissists are not sociopaths; they are capable of empathy and remorse during "moments of clarity" in which they become aware of the sort of assholes they are. When that happens, they fall into deep depression, and stay there until those around him rebuild his self-esteem--whereupon he quickly decides once again that he's the shit and doesn't need those people who helped him.

I would imagine that Bush has gone through several cycles of drinking, depression, thoughts of suicide, and so on. He was probably talked into art therapy as part of his recovery--which will never be completed.

The release of the photos and the public scorn which will result isn't going to help him either.

Good.
