Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumssix Democrats also voted against minimum wage increase
John Barrow (Georgia- 12th District)
Jim Matheson- (Utah- 4th District)
Mike McIntyre (North Carolina- 7th District)
Bill Owens- (New York- 21st District)
Colin Peterson- (Minnesota- 7th District)
Kurt Schrader- (Oregon- 5th District)
All six of them represent conservative districts. None of their votes made any difference to the outcome. But I'd still like to understand their motivation for voting against the hike in the minimum wage. Did they want to pad their moderate voting records? Did they want to avoid needlessly annoying business interests in their districts? Did they hope to win or maintain business support? Are they genuine assholes who truly share Republican values?
One thing that is not possible is that they voted in a way that represented their constituents' values, because there are no congressional districts where most people oppose raising the minimum wage. Seventy-one percent of Southerners support raising the minimum wage, as do 50% of Republicans. You won't find a single congressmen whose opposition to raising the rate has majority support in their district. Not one.

(15,438 posts)should be hung around their necks in the upcoming re-election bid. If they won't stand with the people they claim to represent, then their constituents should return the favor and not stand with them. Period.
The DCCC needs to find a candidate who is actually a Democrat and use this vote to take out those corporate asswipes. They shouldn't be rewarded with another term for turning their backs on the most vulnerable in their district.

(12,157 posts)There are districts where only a "moderate" Democrat can get elected, but there is nothing "moderate" or Democratic about opposing the minimum wage increase.

(47,953 posts)He is a republican in everything but affiliation, who runs in a "swing district". He keeps the seat safe for the repubs, who generally run extreme t-baggers, and whop would lose if said t-baggers ever had to deal with a real democrat. Frankly I wish he would lose, since it might mean that we would get better representation, or at least it would remove one of these fake dems from congress. He always can out spend any challenger, and has the last 6 years that I have been here. I don't expect Bernie Sanders down here in Georgia, but you will notice none of our other D's from Georgia voted like this. Barrow also votes agains Obamacare and against anything else Obama supports.

(11,122 posts)Those are not Democrats. They may be reagan-democrats ( a fetid offshoot, growing like cancer cells, of self-satisfied and selfish voters and elected officials who used to think they are Democrats ). Or they may have just used the D to get elected.
But they are not Democrats.
