Maryland Becomes 18th State to Overturn the Death Penalty

With the House vote last night, both houses of the state legislature have now voted to abolish the death penalty. Governor O'Malley has been pushing the bill and will sign it as soon as it hits his desk.

The bill will not immediately take effect as death penalty proponents will probably be able to get enough support to put it to a referendum. Maryland's same sex marriage law law followed the same path and was successful. It is expected the referendum to overturn will fail.

The bill also allows the governor to commute the sentences of the five persons on Death Row to Life Without The Possibility of Parole. He is expected to that.

Now . . . . let's see a universal health care bill . . . . .
