Mitt Romney may not have told the whole truth about the scandalous tale of his Irish Setter, Seamus, being strapped to the roof of his car during a 12-hour family road trip to Canada. According to a trusted Politicker tipster, two of Mr. Romneys sons had an off-record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983. Mr. Romneys wife, Ann, has previously said Seamus survived the trip and went on to live to a "ripe old age." As of this writing, Mr. Romneys campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment on this story.

When he was not blowing up frogs, young George -- always restless and something of a natural leader -- would lead neighborhood children on daredevil expeditions around town, seeing how close they could come to breaking their necks. George also quickly acquired a colorful vocabulary

(5,762 posts)Dogs don't run away unless they're being mistreated.
Don't get me wrong. Our dog will go zoomies pell mell into traffic if allowed off-leash. (This is a problem we are having remedied with owner training classes). At the bark park he goes crazy. And then he comes and quietly sits with us. We don't even have to call him. After his run, he wants to be with his pack. Were he to escape our yard somehow, I have no doubt that he'd eventually come back once his curiosity and smell-needs had been satisfied. Note: I'm not testing this theory, but I'm pretty sure.
Dogs don't run away. They know where the food, the shelter, and the pack is. A dog will prefer his familiar environment if it offers even a small measure of comfort and security.
If a dog truly runs away, you can be sure that his treatment has been well-nigh unbearable and he would rather take his chances than allow it to continue.

(1,405 posts)If we are not careful the doggies will get out and run around the block and then come back through the alley and look at us and say "Whut?? we were just going out on an ADVENTURE!!"
Damn little strong headed, strong willed, just plain strong little pieces of adorable fluff.
How I love them. Brother and sister.

(16,207 posts)My husband was switching his collar, he got off the leash, and decided he wanted to do some trick-or-treating. He actually ran inside their house, and came running when my husband called him. It scared the living daylights out of us. Luckily, the neighbor (we'd never previously met) had a dog of his own, and found our pup's visit funny.
Even if Moose is three now, he likes to chew. (Labrador Retriever. Need I say more?) The tether we use to let him go into the backyard got a hole in it. We didn't figure it out till he came inside. He came right back to us, instead of taking off.
I can't even imagine how scared and distressed poor Seamus must have been.
I hope you have many happy years with your pup, too. There is nothing better than seeing that wagging tail and getting those slurpy doggie kisses.

(52,162 posts)he escaped from the lead I had and I figured he was gone for good since I had only had him for a couple of days. But a few hours later back he was, hasn't left since. He had his own tough trip down to NC with me. I moved down in a very, very full station wagon where I had my seat and he had just a little place for him. I had to all but throw him back in on our last pee stop but we made it. He even rides in cars he started to let me put him in a car again only a day later. I know he would definatly not purposely run away.

(21,925 posts)I picture him in a tennis outfit, with a sweater's sleeves tied around his neck, holding a racquet. I don't think he looks right in a business suit as that implies he works for a living, but a preppy affected look of casual country club wealth is more his style.
