General Discussion

I'm sure by now you have all heard that Susan G. Komen for the Cure has completely cut its support for Planned Parenthood, only a few months after a new anti-abortion vice president joined the organization. Sadly, this is only the latest attack against Planned Parenthood, an extremely important organization that has been at the forefront of the fight for Reproductive Rights.
You also probably remember that last year the DU Admins announced that we would no longer be doing quarterly fund drives for Democratic Underground.
With no quarterly DU fund drives, people have been asking whether our popular Valentine Hearts promotion would be back in 2012. Over the last week, the DU Admins have been discussing the issue, and trying to figure out if we should bring back the Valentine Hearts even if we are not doing a fund drive for DU. And one of the ideas that we have been discussing is to do the Valentine Hearts as a Charity Drive.
This latest news has convinced us that we need to do something to show our support for Planned Parenthood. So, I think we are going to do the Valentine Hearts this year. But instead of pocketing the money for Democratic Underground, we think it might be worthwhile to collect it all and donate it to Planned Parenthood.
After all, Planned Parenthood is a good fit with Valentine's Day.
What do you think?

(12,233 posts)I grew up in a small town in VT. Needless to say that every Dr a young lady could see was someone they knew and knew their parents. If you asked the Dr. for Birth control or asked for any STD testing, there was no anonymity.
However, there was a Planned Parenthood close enough in one of the larger towns that everyone who was 16 went to. They did not tell parents. They did not question. They answered questions, and better yet, they gave free exams and birth control (most of the time they asked for us to pay what we could.. most of us would pay $5.00 for a pack or $15.00 for a 3 month supply of birth control). They also performed abortions at the clinic for anyone who needed discretion and felt they needed to get one. This one PP clinic kept many, many, many young women from needlessly getting pregnant, real information on how to be sexually safe from STD's and such, and in the few off chances that a young lady did become pregnant, there was a "fix" for the problem. Life could remain somewhat on-track, graduation and college were still a dream that wouldn't be squashed by raising a baby way too young. AND like I said, discretion was the absolute best thing about this clinic. No one's parents would be told and the entire town did not have to know one's business. In a small town, that's a really big deal.
I do not want to see Planned Parenthood go the way of ACORN. Its way too important!!! Its the saving grace of many women across this nation. Its the place where women can be treated with respect and dignity. And there are a lot of women out there who have similar stories to my own... where PP was sanctuary and safety and a vital asset. I only wish they had more offices, more funding, and the ability to treat as many women that they could possibly fit into their offices.. especially younger women and poor women. i can't imagine PP not being around in the future. I haven't been to all their offices by a long shot, but the few I've been in have had the amazing feel of comfort. They weren't like other free-clinics which smell too strongly of disinfectant and lighting was all dark and sketchy... Its just too important to lose.
I will probably buy more hearts than I ever have before. They are under attack and that basically means women are under attack. You would think for all the rhetoric about paying for poor people and unwanted babies, this would be funded to the hilt... Avoiding pregnancy before one is ready is a good thing and we all know the religious right only loves the fetus, but as soon as a baby is born, they want nothing to do with paying for the care of that child.... And for all their lofty rhetoric, their own children are accessing PP and utilizing the discretion of the services to keep themselves from becoming pregnant and to access birth control in a manner that their parents wouldn't be able to find out.

(63,645 posts)100% of the money would go to Planned Parenthood. DU gets nothing.
If someone wants a Star Membership subscription, that would have to be purchased separately, independent of the hearts.
CTyankee
(63,912 posts)That would be terrific. I retired from the PP here in CT a couple of months after I became active on DU and I used to talk up DU to the VP of Public Policy. She didn't know about DU. I hope she has since found out about how strong we are in the progressive online community and hope she has become a member and supporter. It is my contention, having worked in the prochoice community for many years, that PP needs to enlarge its outreach and become bolder, taking its cue from the Marriage Equality movement and winning more hearts and minds. I am seriously concerned about the eroding support for choice in this country. I have 3 granddaughters and fear for their future...
Skinner
(63,645 posts)It would be better if people could donate directly to PP themselves so they can get the tax deduction. But there wouldn't be any way to integrate that with our software and automatically assign the hearts. So I think we need to set it up so the money goes to DU first, and then DU bundles it and gives it to Planned Parenthood.

Aren't you afraid that you are actually going to do something that may be considered to be sort of "hopey changey" and will put every other site on the entire freakin' series of tubes to shame?
Are you sure you want to take advantage of accomplishing something good from the number of motivated, dedicated liberals that have amassed here over the years, some for over a decade?
Because if you are, I'm in.
I mean, gawd help us all, if this actually leads to us ever becoming human beans, and actually showing empathy towards a women's cause here at DU.

(38,549 posts)President Barack Obama today made the most contentious move of his young administration with an order, overturning a ban on federal funds to foreign family planning organisations that either offer abortions or provide information or counselling about abortion.
... It will allow US aid, usually through the US agency for international development, to flow to HIV/Aids clinics, birth-control providers and other organisations that advocate or provide counselling about abortion across the world. It is known as the "global gag rule" because it denies US taxpayer dollars to clinics that even mention abortion to women with unplanned pregnancies.
The rule was signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1984, overturned by Bill Clinton in 1993, and reinstated by Bush. Critics of the rule say it deprives the world's poor women of desperately needed medical care, while proponents say US tax dollars should not promote abortion.
The issue was the same as with PP domestically in the US: the result of denying funding is to deny disadvantaged women access to basic health care services.
Signing the order was the very first thing Bush did after his first inauguration, in 2001.
Repealing it was the second thing Obama did -- after pledging to close Guantanamo.
When Bush signed the order, people worldwide made donations to Planned Parenthood International and other organizations that provided women's reproductive health care in less developed countries ... in George W. Bush's name, so he got the thank-you messages. (Planned Parenthood Canada, which is purely an information and counselling, non-medical organization, launched that campaign here.)
So Skinner, I think the initiative is excellent -- yes of course Planned Parenthood is à propos for Valentine's Day! Its history is the fight for women's reproductive rights, which women must be able to exercise in order to enjoy intimate relationships without coercion of any kind, and it is a favourite right-wing punching bag. Nothing could be more appropriate.
(Of course it does leave us foreigners out in the cold a little, but most of us enjoy the heath care services that PP provides, already ...)
Feldspar
(84 posts)"women's reproductive rights, which women must be able to exercise in order to enjoy intimate relationships without coercion of any kind".
That is, after all, what Valentine's Day is really about. Not women's breast health, but the right for women to continue to *enjoy* heterosexual intercourse.
