http://www.cnn.com/2013/03/14/travel/cruise-ship-trouble/index.html?hpt=hp_bn1The experience on the Carnival Dream became something of a nightmare for some passengers Wednesday when power went off, some toilets stopped working, and no one was allowed to get off the vessel even though the ship was docked at Philipsburg, St. Maarten, in the eastern Caribbean.
Although power had been restored and facilities were functioning again, the ship still couldn't leave port.
Cruise passengers received a letter from the captain, according to a passenger who e-mailed a photo of the correspondence to CNN.
Captain Massimo Marino told passengers they will be booked on flights to Orlando or another destination. Passengers with cars at Port Canaveral will be bused from Orlando to the facility about an hour away.
The letter also offers passengers a three-day refund and a half-price cruise in the future.

(6,787 posts)I'm sure that many of the passengers were using their somewhat limited "retirement" funds for what they thought would be a lovely adventure. And it can't be happy news for Carnival employees, either.

(63,912 posts)even without the problem it sounds like a boring, intellect-free experience...

(89,250 posts)would probably just use it as relaxing time. just mostly read, sleep, eat. i guess i would be taking the chance and hoping nothing goes wrong.
but it's not really anything i would ever pay for. in fact even if i got a free ticket i might try to see how much i could sell it for first.

(154,021 posts)We went on an Alaskan cruise, not with carnival, the oceanography lecture on waves was incredible, as well as the on shore hiking trips we took into the rain forest
We could have chosen for a less stimulating affair...and gorged ourselves silly...we did not.

(63,912 posts)I actually don't go on cruises, altho I have looked closely at river cruises in France. I like to be closer to the shore (just in case...). Also, I like being in old European capitals, so that means a river cruise, narrow between land, I can see it from the ship...any problems, we got land real near...whew!
Actually, I lied. I went on a barge in the the Netherlands, to the towns where the Old Dutch Masters painted. Man, that boat was something...tiny little thing, with a stair down to get meals that you took backwards like a ladder...the bathrooms in each cabin was approx. 30 inches wide...we asked the "captain" of this thing how we could get a wake up call in the morning and he said "I come vis a bucket of vater!"
I have fond memories of that trip...

Someday I would like to do an ecological cruise to somewhere like the Galapagos.

(63,912 posts)have something that would appeal to you (www.roadscholar.org) and it's a nonprofit. I have traveled with them 3 times and will be taking their Independent London trip in May. I also recommend Overseas Adventure Travel. National Geographic has some fab trips too but they are pricey.

(13,776 posts)Just one week but plenty of cities/countries, so it's great if you don't have a ton of time, and they had super nice staff, great food, and very good tour guides. It's nice, when I see their ads at the beginning of "Masterpiece Theatre," to have positive thoughts instead of thinking "aw, they aren't really all that." I think the Rhine cruise was one of the more affordable cruises they offer. Personally I wouldn't necessarily recommend the add-on days at the beginning or end; they added disproportionately to the cost and because we were on our own it just wasn't the same as cruising down a river being spoiled. On the other hand, once you've paid to get over to Europe, you might as well spend a few extra dollars to get the most out of your plane tickets. So I'm not un-recommending the add-on days, just saying that if you're on a budget, don't sweat passing them up.
So, for whatever that's worth....
