PETA to VT: End youth fishing program Animal rights group says fishing is cruel, promotes violence

Fishing is cruel and encourages violence, so the state of Vermont should scrap its family and youth-oriented Let’s Go Fishing program, the animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says.

“The only lesson that fishing teaches children is that violence is acceptable when it is directed against those who don’t look like them or are smaller and weaker than they are,” Tracy Reiman, executive vice president of PETA, wrote in a letter, dated Monday, to Vermont Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry. “If cats or dogs were the victims of similar abuse, the perpetrators could be thrown in jail for cruelty to animals. A lack of understanding and knowledge about fish, especially among young people, allows this cruelty to continue.”

The Let’s Go Fishing program is “an organized effort to train a network of volunteers to teach and encourage young people and their families how to fish,” according to the Fish and Wildlife Department’s website. The effort emphasizes the themes of hands-on fishing, aquatic ecology and management, the importance of habitat conservation and ethics, according to the website.

Fucking PETA. Here's an activity that families can do outside together, and they come along and try to crap on it.

Several early mornings a week, we'd trot down the field to the brook and fish for brookies. We had such a great time- even though we often came back with nothing.

Why blast deer out of the woods when they can just go into supermarket and get prepackaged meat? Most hunters just hunt for the thrill of the kill, especially when they kill a big buck with 10-point or larger racks.

in their backyard and not enough vegetation to feed them. It's less cruel than letting the deer starve to death.

As for fishing??? What?

We went fishing summers when I was a child. Anyone who thinks it is violent has never tried it. You just sit there and wait. It teaches patience like nothing else.

Most if the time it's full of shit that's bad for the body in the long run. Also the taste of fresh meat is better than the store bought stuff.

I post that title because it pisses off PETA, always a good thing to do.

PETA is ridiculous.

I am all for animals, but PETA takes things to a point where one cannot successfully ridicule them. Poe's Law is self-applicable.

I devote alot of my time and money to animal groups but Peta is ridiculous. There are plenty of people who fish because they find it healthier than buying the crap in supermarkets.

I don't think PETA is a joke. They are an activist group, so things they do stir things up and sometimes go overboard. That's what activism is about.

But I would think they could prioritize a little better.

Still...it got me to thinking about fishing, though. So if that was their mission, they are accomplishing that to some small degree.

on the more egregious acts against creatures? Prioritize? there's no chance that this campaign will have an effect.

Still, it does get people to thinking, I guess, if that's PETA's point. It got me to thinking, anyway.

Peta's main purpose with these campaigns is publicity. They want to get people talking about their ideas.

Imagine that, here you are talking about Peta and their ideas.
