(57,236 posts)there's very little about Christianity a lot of these "Christians" seem to like or embrace.

(170 posts)Because so many self described 'Christians' are anything but. I know this from personal experience. My ex-husband was a 'devout Christian'. He was one person in public, and something else entirely at home.

(57,236 posts)1. Everybody is in the station of life that G*d is rewarding them with in proportion to their "worthiness".
2. I'm going the heaven and you're not.
3. By doing certain actions, they will bring about certain conditions that will bring about Christ's return, usually having something to do with Israel. And a lot of these folks may be functionally pro-Zionist they also sometimes seem anti-Semitic.
Lots of situational ethics, too.
I say that as an almost retired Lutheran. I have to say I heard a couple of surprising sermons from the Methodist pastor at my wife's church. He once told a story about professor at a university class disputing G*D, challenging G*d to knock him off his podium. A returned veteran walked up to the lecturn and back handed the teacher off the podium.
That really bothered me when the correct answer was, "G*d doesn't perform pallor tricks.."

(53,072 posts)one of the few, is you don't hear that stuff at all. My mom was telling me of an archbishop would was ex-communicated when she was a girl (she's in her 70s) when he starting talking about how only Catholics would go to heaven.
So I don't think your criteria is universal. There are hypocritical religious people who don't adhere to those particular beliefs.

(57,236 posts)and Gestapo. Good Baptists lynched. Its not the religion. That criteria works just fine here in central Texas, Tea Party central with Cruz (a source for shame for a lot of us) as our Senator, and a lot of folks with much "easy" money that they didn't earn. I suspect a lot of them feel so guilty about it that they have to think G*d gave it to them out of their worthiness because they didn't earn it though their parents or grand-parents may have. Check "Pastor" Hagee sometime.

(100,103 posts)There's a passage where he says something along the lines of "My disciples, be not like the hypocrites who preach on street corners or in synagogues."
They should heed his warning.

(14,177 posts)It's funny too. Or rather ironic maybe. I would like a government that takes care of the sick and poor, yet I don't want one based on Xian values.
