Wonderful vacation times + commuting for work is better than driving if it is available

3. I visited my old hometown last fall-first time in years. The tracks were torn up; the bridges gone,

the railroad right-of-way all grown over, almost like the trains never existed.

The few remaining bridges were in disrepair and waiting to get torn down.

I used to wake up in the middle of the night with the sound of the diesel's horn, and the train running through our town into the night-time darkness.

Every kid who grew up in my town used to head down to the tracks and wave at the engineers as the trains rumbled by.

They're gone, and they'll never come back.

I sure wish they were still running.
