It's time to get started preparing for the 2014 Elections. Here are some of the things anyone can do in his or her own local area to begin the work of electing a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, increasing our majority in the Senate, and to elect Democrats to state legislatures all across the US. Some of the ways anyone can help include:
1. Join your local Democratic organization - It's the best way to get in touch with potential candidates and to get a foot in.
2. Check your current elected legislators out - Whether they're Democrats or Republicans, get to know their positions.
3. Find potential candidates and encourage them - It's still too early to declare for office, but not to identify good people.
4. Get involved with progressive groups - Get active and you'll be early enough to make a difference in 2014.
5. Learn more about how candidates get chosen - This varies from state to state. Be sure you know the process.
6. Consider running for something - Run for a local office, no matter how small. It's relatively easy, and educational.
7. Start now - It's never too early, but soon becomes too late. There's lots to do, and few to do it.
Have other ideas? Post them. If we start now and work hard, the goals are achievable, even in places you might not think so.

(146,318 posts)If your state legislature is in session right now, find out what bills are coming up and personally lobby your state representatives about them. State legislators get a lot less email than members of Congress. You can make a difference.
For example, right now in the MN legislature, raising the minimum wage, marriage equality, and gun control laws are in the process of being considered. I've been communicating with my legislators and encouraging them to vote the correct way (easy in my districts) and to work hard to bring others to the progressive side on each measure. As new measures are introduced, I add those to the list for personal lobbying.
I helped my own state legislators get elected in 2012. They know who I am. They read my emails.
