It turns out Rand Pauls filibuster was big scam. Sen. Paul has wasted little time implementing the second part of his planned filibuster. He is now trying to cash in with a fundraising letter.
The true story behind Rand Pauls filibuster is starting to come out. According to the National Journal, Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans knew the filibuster was coming, But the day wasnt entirely unplanned. Paul, often accused of being a lone wolf on Capitol Hill, had laid some of the groundwork to win over the GOP establishment. McConnell and Co. knew the filibuster was coming, even if they did not know when precisely or what exactly it would look like.
This fact contradicts the myth that Paul floated that he decided to come to the Senate floor and start speaking. Sen. Paul has been suggesting that everybody just showed up, We probably had 15 congressmen come over to the Senate floor, he said this morning in a radio interview with Glenn Beck. Paul pointed out that House members are allowed to come to the Senate floor but are barred from speaking or coming forward, so they were presumably there just to lend support with their presence. Ive never seen that happen before. And they came spontaneously. Nobody called them. They just showed up.

Surprise, surprise, just as I said in my post earlier. Rand Paul doesn't care about you or me all he cares about his himself and how something can help him or his anti-government lovers.

(32,086 posts)I am sure he was hoping to sow discord on the Democratic side, too. Judging from many of the posts here in the past couple of days, he has accomplished his mission in that regard.

(146,318 posts)We have to get a Democratic majority in the House and increase our majority in the Senate. If we can do that, Rand Paul becomes irrelevant until 2016. What do you say? Shall we work on that?

(146,318 posts)Rand Paul is a libertarian. He is the most important person on his planet. That's the libertarian way, after all.

(11,464 posts)They are grifters.
They always yapped about auditing something.
Perhaps them would be a good start.
They always reminded me of those scammers that call up seniors and rip them off trying to imitate their grandkids, or saying they are friends of the grandkids and their grandkids have been arrested.
Instead of sending them money, send them dirty socks.
Though the socks are probably cleaner than they are
IMHO
Sending them money is like sending your neighborhood John Birch Society money.

(2,522 posts)I get solicitations from various Democratic groups every time anything happens in Washington. Basically, they're always asking for money, and they use whatever happened last week as the bait.
Wasn't Obama's speech great? Send us money to carry out the vision!
Did you hear what Todd Akin said? Send us money to fight people like him!
We passed such-and-such bill. Send us money so we can pass more things!
Many of the things they cite are worthwhile accomplishments, and it was only for fundraising, even if fundraising and re-election are what drive every politician.

(36,827 posts)For one thing, even though Sanders referred to it as a "fillibuster" it didn't block any legislative action. It was intended to bring attention to political events of the time that were directly working against the poor and working class.
He also donated all of his personal profits from the book to charity.

(21,925 posts)if he objects to general use of drones. He could address the issue of torture, wiretaps, and the intrusion on our privacy if he's concerned with human rights and the constitution. Instead, he does it in the context of the confirmation of the CIA chief, where he knows the issue will go nowhere. gRANDstand Paul was clearly grandstanding and I guess fundraising is as good an explanation as anything.
