(3,709 posts)Joel Pett is my local newspaper's (Lexington Herald-Leader) editorial cartoonist...
He must be in heaven over having Paul as a Kentucky Senator...what fodder...love his cartoon...and Danziger's is perfect.

(14,175 posts)What am I missing?
Is it as simple as Obama ordered something different?
Is that he's paying so they ordered a more expensive meal?
Is that he is more PC and vegan in his food choice?
Either of these don't seem all that funny. There must be another interpretation I'm sure I'll say "D'oh!" over.

(47,953 posts)and the others don't. Horsey is pretty reliably left wing in his cartoons. I think he is just making fun of the dinner.

(14,175 posts)I really enjoy Horsey's cartoons but this one is falling flat if that's the only interpretation. I expect more from him.
Sure I'm over analyzing a cartoon FFS, but I'm like that.
I presume that Obama actually ordered the salad, unless its implied that the Senators ordered his food for him ie..When Obama asks for "steak" (tax cuts) they give him "salad" back. But that doesn't make sense if it is Obama that is taking them to the dinner.
So he ordered the salad. But Obama is not a vegetarian as far as I know. In fact he'd probably go out of his way to order steak in that case in order to be bipartisan. An alternate cartoon would actually be more poignant if he WAS a vegan and ordered a steak....as a statement of how much he is trying to accommodate the GOP......and the Senators seeing that, all order the salad!

Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula? the senator said. I mean, theyre charging a lot of money for this stuff.
The state of Iowa, for all of its vast food production, does not have a Whole Foods, a leading natural and organic foods market. The closest? Omaha, Minneapolis or Kansas City.

(14,175 posts)I responded to n2doc before I saw your post.
But it still seems to be reaching a little if it is referring back to some minor campaign event pre-Presidential. I doubt if most readers would even remember or know about that. I didn't. And it still ain't that funny. So he's ordering arugala and that implies that he is elitist because Whole Foods charges a lot for it (overlooking the fact that he is in a restaurant)? What about steak? A prime cut of steak is way more expensive and thus elitist no?
Sorry I've got a little time on my hands. As an artist myself whose done some cartoons, this kind of thing bugs me.

(6,440 posts)They used it to portray Obama as an elitist weenie, because Real Murkans eat steak. Seems a bit odd to be dragging it up now, though, I agree.

(30,250 posts)while they see Obama and the Democrats as the "arugula" crowd. In other words, they view the Republicans as the all American types and the Democrats as elitists and out of touch with the common people.
Whatever...........
