Republican Budget Bill Defunds Nonexistent ACORN… Again

The GOP’s most recent short-term budget resolution contains an odd provision; specifically, it seeks to defund ACORN, the anti-poverty group that found itself the subject of a major scandal after various allegations of wrongdoing surfaced. These allegations included facilitating prostitution, advising people on how to cheat on their taxes, voter registration fraud, embezzlement and more. There’s just one tiny problem with this: ACORN was defunded by Congress in 2009, and closed its doors entirely in 2010.

The language stipulating that ACORN is not to receive funding is deep inside the bill. Section 510, on page 221, states:

“None of the funds made available in this Act may be distributed to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) or its subsidiaries or successors.”

According to The Huffington Post, the House Budget Committee’s spokesperson, Jennifer Hing, says that this provision can be found in most budgets these days, and is typical.
