With the news of Senator Levin's retirement coming out today, the buzz is already swirling here on DU about the "devastating" news that Senator Carl Levin has decided to retire.
In 2014, Senator Levin will have served 45 years in public service. He will have represented the State of Michigan as a United States Senator for 35 of those years. At the admirable maturity of 80 years, Senator Levin will have earned his place in history and WE need to elect the next United States Senator from Michigan that can now carry the torch that Senator Levin has carried for all these years!
Its time, right now, to build a new democratic party. We need to get to work and stack Congress with new, talented public servants that will fight for the platform of the democratic party. In the words of Governor Patrick, democrats need to grow a backbone and fight. We need to fight, right now and elect people who will represent our values at the great American table.

(21,086 posts)And you can bet every dollar you've got that the Michigan GOP WILL cheat in any election for his seat. Guaranteed. So for anyone at the higher echelon in the Dem. party who gives a damn, you had better send your lawyers to Michigan for Levin's seat. You're going to them if you expect to hang onto this seat.

(5,044 posts)I find confidence in Senator Levin's decision, he is not the type to step out when he is needed most. In fact, I bet he see's what many don't currently see, the seat is likely safe in the democratic column.
I must admit, that I would very much like to see a Senator Granholm. Our party has done an outstanding job in moving forward Senators with a certain gravitas, Granholm easily fits that mold.

(40,416 posts)Carl's older brother, Sander Levin still serves in the US House of Representatives.
I am with others here. The perfect Democratic candidate to run for this seat would be Jennifer Granholm.
Maybe we ought to encourage her to do so. We have about a year to get her on board.

(5,044 posts)I agree, with the year to get her on board. We have no idea what's gonna shake out politically in the coming months, she should take a few months before making a decision.
