By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg who banned 16-ounce sodas, trans fats in restaurants and public smoking has a new bug in his ear: young people who play their music too loud through their headphones.
The city's spending a quarter-million dollars to launch a Hearing Loss Prevention Media Campaign warning young people through social media and focus groups about the risk of losing their hearing, The New York Post reported Wednesday.
"With public and private support, a public education campaign is being developed to raise awareness about safe use of personal music players ... and risks of loud and long listening," Nancy Clark, the city Health Department's assistant commissioner of environmental disease prevention, told The Post.
Researchers at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston reported in 2010 that nearly 1 in 5 Americans ages 12 to 19 have lost some of their hearing.

(4,876 posts)little pet peeves, I can tell you that if you have ear buds in, and they are so loud that the person next to you can hear them, you are damaging your ears.
I'm a roadie, I know a bit about damaged hearing.

(102 posts)There's a difference between telling them (PSA's and stuff) verses Bloomberg's outlaw everything approach. He's honestly become a democratically elected tyrant for NYC.

(22,143 posts)If you want to be a nit picker lets pick some nits.
A) I was calling Bloomberg a nanny stater, which he is, and I said he didn't know how to mind his own business, which he doesn't.
B) I didn't opine on whatever proposal was made at all until after you jumped in.
So, in reality, I did NOT take two sides of anything. My original post was my take on Bloomberg, my response to you was that it's fine to point things out to people but not fine to attempt to force them to do things the nanny staters think they should.
So, nyah nyah to you.

Brought to us by a mayor who in my opinion is a hypocritical 1%er who uses his wealth to force others to bend to his whims while ignoring them himself after buying himself a third term.
Bloomie can go screw.
The Straight Story
(48,121 posts)And folks know full well it will start with this and end with other things.
Why not just a public campaign on smoking/sodas/etc?
We don't want to educate, we want to control - it is not your body, your choice, except in one case where liberals think it should be and one case only.
Educate people? Fine. Let's educate them about all the choices they make that could harm them across the board, from sex, to abortions, to guns, to loud music - but let's stop there and let folks have the ability to choose how to live their own lives.
