UK Guardian: The War on Women: A look back at the turbulent 2012 for American females

2012 was a tough year for American females as various aspects of female health and reproduction repeatedly took center stage. Politicians and pundits, mainly Republican, made degrading and factually incorrect remarks about rape and contraception. But Democrats also left their mark with an ill-timed snipe at stay-at-home mom Ann Romney, reinvigorating the "mommy wars".

• Men speak out on birth control for women: A congressional hearing (House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform) on birth control coverage has an all-male panel of "experts"

• If women keep their legs together, they won't get pregnant: "Back in my days, they used Bayer aspirin for contraceptives. The gals put it between their knees, and it wasn't that costly," Foster Friess, a wealthy backer of conservative presidential candidate Rick Santorum, tells MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell.

Wednesday 29 February

• Women who use birth control are 'sluts': Conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh calls Sandra Fluke a slut and prostitute after she testified before Congress supporting birth control coverage for women. "She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex," Limbaugh says.
