Dear DUers, I have a favor to ask.

Mercuryblues posted this thread. I clicked on the link and viewed the page with horror and sorrow and anger and fear all bundled up together.

Warning: this is not for the faint at heart:

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Domestic-Violence-Dont-make-me-tell-you-twice/438192542917753

It's been reported on and nothing has been done about it. It's a new page. I'm hoping that if we can mass report it, they'll take it down.

If you're a facebook member please go to facebook and report this.

EDIT: The site is apparently some troll's mega-flamebait ego masturbation material.

What really is the right response to that? All the negative comments posted on fb are only helping the guy get off. Alerting on it is definitely the right thing to do, but I wonder if commenting isn't just counterproductive?

I don't know...I adore most of the women in my life (wife, daughters, friends and family members) and even those I don't adore I respect. If this troll (or trolls, more likely) is attempting some educational social commentary then it/he/they is failing excruciatingly badly; other than that, all he seems to be doing is advocating violence against women.

What should be done about that? Is this really a First Amendment issue?

29. I reported it as hate speech rather than violence
Mon Mar 4, 2013, 08:26 PM
Mar 2013

It seemed that it didn't exactly fall into any of the "violence" categories--technically, that is--that Facebook has so thoughtfully provided, which might be why it's still up, but I think it's pretty inarguably hate speech against somebody based on gender, which is one of Facebook's own categories.

I don't know whether other people have tried that too or just gone with reporting it as violence, which normal people would consider it to be. Sheesh. If there was a pro-lynching page, would they leave it up this long, too? I've been reading all day about how people have been reporting it, yet there it still is. Disgusting.

I wasn't that happy with the choices so I went through them before settling on hate speech based on gender.

I'm guessing that people at Facebook want to do the right thing but the content is so nasty that this keeps getting kicked up to higher levels of support.

I hope so, anyway.

It's appalling that FB will allow you to snitch on your friends if they have a naughty picture and they will have it taken down very swiftly, but something like this takes mass effort when it should be a no brainer.

Can somebody else click on the link and let me know if that page is still up? I got home from work, went to the page, and then created a post on my timeline asking my friends to alert on it. Almost immediately, my post was taken down. It occurred to me that whoever owns the page probably saw my share of the link, and thus alerted on my post. Can anybody verify if the page is still up?

I suppose that makes sense - in an icky, intrusive way. But I'm glad it's gone.

What I gathered from a visit out there earlier was that the page was run by several people. The person monitoring it and replying at the time claimed to be a woman who had been abused. (I find that hard to believe.) "She" also claimed they did it "for the lulz". You know, do something heinous for attention, coz apparently it's a load of laughs when people get outraged about someone exploiting sensitive subjects like domestic violence.

"She" also found those threatening to have the page pulled by reporting it amusing, saying it wouldn't succeed.

I wonder if "she"/they are lulzing now!

the whole "men get abused by women too" thing had me wondering if it was some kind of social awareness attempt gone horribly awry...lulz, indeed.

I imagine the troll and its buddies are sitting around yucking it up now, and I can only hope that they are at least feeling the pain of being axed, insignificant as that pain probably is to them.

Hi,

Thanks for your recent report of a potential violation on Facebook. After reviewing your report, we were not able to confirm that the specific page you reported violates Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities.

58. No, but you can create a private group
Tue Mar 5, 2013, 03:38 PM

...that's concealed from non-members and searches. But I think that has to be done from scratch, ie you can't convert a public page to a private group.

I don't think that's what happened since all our posts with links to the page vanished too. That's FB scrubbers at work.

I got the same email this morning. I'd be ticked off if I didn't already know that page was gone!
