They got what they wanted. We now have either the sequester and its devastating social program cuts, or a Democratic President signing into law the vicious Social Security cuts he requested. The faux Shock Doctrine debt ceiling crisis of the spring was successfully orchestrated to guarantee austerity no matter what.
So, now that we are guaranteed the economy-slowing, pain- and desperation-inducing austerity that hundreds of economists warned against, what's on the agenda for the corporate thieves next?
Oh, the next one's a biggie. They're coming for our education system, at the expense of our children and our nation's future. They will make a bundle on thi$$$$$$$ one, and they will accomplish it under a Democratic President:

President Obama on Friday said the automatic spending cuts set to kick in is not a win for any party involved in negotiations.
"I'm saying that everybody is going to have to do something, and the one key to this whole thing is trying to make sure we keep in mind who we are are here for," Obama said at the White House. "We're not here for ourselves. We're thought here for our parties. We're not here to advance our electoral prospects. We're here for American families who have been getting battered pretty good over the last four years, are just starting to see the economy improve and businesses are just starting to see some coming back. This is not a win for anybody. This is a loss for the American people. The hallmark of Friedman Supply-side economics and IMF Restructuring was privatization, austerity for the lower and middle-classes, and a push to export and sell-off assets that had previously been nationalized. However, the Junta never really progressed past the national security state model of development, and was in many ways still a closed state-controlled economy. Dictatorships are expensive to operate, and global bankers are pragmatic.
The Chilean economy under the dictatorship floundered, with both joblessness and costs of living increasing faster than any South American country in the years after the coup. Chile's failures to meet projections for growth of exports and profitability for multinationals caused a reassessment, and a dictatorship was viewed as unsustainable and unprofitable, so, neoliberal reforms and limited re-democratization were implemented. Pinochet lost his plebicite, and was pressured to stand down after 17 years of military dictatorship in Chile. But, not before the alternative of fascism was proven unworkable.
Chile under the neoliberal system of exports-driven development, a controlled democracy, private ownership with limited welfare state social services was closely studied as the model for restructuring Former Soviet Bloc countries and eventually adopted as the means to "reform" larger former Social Democracies of the west.

I wish more people were as smart as you. I mean, it's clear as day, right? It's not like Obama has anything to lose here, right? Except his legacy ... and any second term agenda that will ultimately be at risk now because of a bad economic recession that could be down the pike. But that's a small price to pay just to kick-start austerity, right? HE MUST BE IN ON IT!
This is the dumbest thing I've read on DU. Why would Obama stake his whole presidency on cuts that would ultimately ruin it? Am I to believe he's that careless or dumb? I know some DUers like to believe Obama is as stupid as some of the posters here ... but that just isn't the case.

(16,327 posts)A pragmatist, not an idealist. He knows that Congress would be unable to make the kind of cuts he believes would be necessary, so the sequester was the easiest, most politically expedient way to allows those cuts to go through. He has never been shy about voicing his view of the need for serious cuts. He is the one that put together the Simpson Bowles Commission, looking for recommendations on places to cut. He got his cuts -- including big defense one -- just like he wanted. Sorry, that's just reality.

That is absolutely silly. Seriously. Obama WANTS these cuts, cuts he knows will ruin the recovery he spent his entire first four years as president working on, knowing full well it'll kill him politically, do in any second term agenda ... something that could doom him in the history books as a failed president - and I'm supposed to believe that?

President Obama Speaks at a Business Council Dinner
February 27, 2013 | 9:26 | Public Domain
President Obama delivers remarks to the Business Council during a dinner.
Park Hyatt Hotel
Washington, D.C.
#t=0sWhat we should be doing -- and what I've been calling for repeatedly over the last not just several months, but several years -- is a balanced approach to deficit reduction that combines some tough spending cuts, particularly focused on how do we deal with long-term trends on some of our entitlement programs, and a tax reform agenda that without raising tax rates further could in fact raise sufficient revenues that combined would yield about $1.5 trillion in deficit reduction over the next decade; would replace the sequester; would bring our deficit-to-GDP ratios below the 3 percent threshold that we need for stabilization; that would stabilize our debt-to-GDP ratios for the next decade; and would lay the groundwork for more expansive growth because we would have simplified our tax system, closed some loopholes, broadened our base, seen an opportunity for corporate tax reform that could also make the whole system more sensible and give you guys a more competitive posture internationally. That's what we should be doing.
OKAY...SO GOOD SO FAR......
Now, you'll be happy to know that that's what I offered to my Republican friends back in December after my election, before the fiscal cliff. Many of you were involved in voicing support for such a balanced approach, even if you didn't sign on to every detail and every line item in our recommended budget. And what I've said is that that continues to be the offer on the table. I am prepared to make some tough decisions, some of which will garner some significant frustration on the part of members of my party, but I think its the right thing to do.
What I cant do is to abide by a set of decisions here in Washington that would put the entire burden of deficit reduction on our seniors -- making their health care more expensive; students -- that would make their student loans and going to college more expensive; that would gut our investments in education and research and infrastructure -- all the foundations for long-term growth.. Thats not what were going to do, because it wouldnt be good for the country and, frankly, it would not be good for your businesses.
's for this one...
BUT THEN HE SAYS:
Now, the question then becomes how do we get from here to there. And I was telling Andrew before we came out the issue is not technical, the issue is political. And the question is whether or not we are going to see a willingness on the part of all parties to compromise in a meaningful way. And what that means is Democrats have to accept the need for entitlement reform. But it also means that Republicans have to accept the need for additional revenues if were going to be able to actually close this deficit and provide the kind of certainty that you need to make your long-term investments.
Whether that can be done in the next two days -- I havent seen things done in two days here in Washington in quite some time. On the other hand, the good news is that I think the public is beginning to pay attention to this, and one thing Im certain about is that the country as a whole is weary of Washington for presiding over a manufactured crisis every three months. Its not good for business confidence. Its certainly not good for consumer confidence. Its unnecessary.
"Not Good for Business Confidence...Not good for Consumer Confidence. It's unnecessary." (Why is it always about BUSINESS and CONSUMERS?" WE ARE THE PEOPLE!

Oh, that was rich.
Really, that's supreme irony, to offer your argument based on "reality," when your entire post is predicated on the jaw-droppingly absurd assertion that Obama, despite ALL his repeated comments, press conferences, public denigration of liberals, passionate speeches, and multiple formal written offers of cuts,...in *reality* does not want cuts in Social Security.
Nope. In Third Way "reality," he secretly opposes them with all his heart and soul and all the principled outrage of any good Democrat. He LOATHES them.
I love these sorts of posts, because they expose the utter garbage of the Third Way's attempts to play both sides. Obama reeeeally, reaeeally believes in the same things we do, but his administration just cannot seem to help doing the opposite, over and over again. They are like the posts that insist that he secretly abhors the war on marijuana and really and truly would rather be prosecuting criminal banks, too, but he just cannot seem to control his Justice Department ("It's a SEPARATE ENTITY!!!11!!" .
As to your stunningly ridiculous question to me: Are you seriously pretending that DUers are that naive, that they don't see the money flooding our electoral system and Washington? Are you seriously suggesting that DUers are so pathetically stupid that we don't understand how elections are financed these days, the deluge of corporate money that is involved, and the loyalties and obligations that engenders? Are you seriously suggesting that we are not aware of the power of lobbying and the corporate and banking money that floods Washington in both parties, through the halls of the White House and Congress, every single day?
And do you seriously think we haven't noticed how elections work these days? Two corporate candidates, and the Republican is always worse. Who ya gonna vote for, suckah?
Let me drop my sarcasm for a moment and speak to you plainly, because this is important. America is sick and tired of being looted, and we are especially sick and tired of being lied to by the ubiquitous corporate media machine, forever droning that "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength" and that our representatives are still doing their Very Best, in every way, on behalf of our interests.
We are, again and again and again, in every permutation possible, being sold out by both parties, in a country that we were raised to believe would always have our best interests at heart. And the problem is SYSTEMIC, occurring across party lines.
We have been here the whole time, remember? We remember how all this started. From the faux debt ceiling "crisis," to the inevitable orchestrated outcome of two options, either of which will benefit the one percent and soak the rest of us, this was perfectly executed Shock Doctrine from the start.
Don't "trickle down" on us and tell us it's raining.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)It's typical of the Obama haters - both on the left and the right. It's remarkable how the left and the right use the same outline when it comes to attacking the President. But what's even more remarkable is that nowhere in your long-winded rant did you ever say anything of substance that points to why Obama would want to the sequester knowing full well it could wreck the economic recovery he staked his WHOLE LEGACY ON. We're not talking Social Security, so, I don't even see why that's in your bluster - we're talking the sequester. Something you believe Obama purposely set up so that it could go off in his second term and undo all the economic progress he spent four years making. Don't you see the absolute absurdity in that?
OBAMA GAINS NOTHING if the economy goes into a recession. Are you that dense to not see this? His president is absolutely tied to the stability of the economy. If we plunge back into a recession, if these cuts are as dire as some on DU say they are (and an extension, the Prez), everything he wants to do in his second term - from gun control to immigration reform - will be held hostage by it. It will wreck his legacy and kill any potential mandate he had coming out of the election. What you blathered on about does not change that,. Obama has as much invested in the economy rebounding as the average worker because it's his whole presidency. He knows he has a small window of opportunity to pass anything of substance and that window absolutely closes the second the economy plunges into a recession because it will be HIS ass who gets the blame - not Boehner ... not the GOP - but the President. Why? Because it's always the President who gets the blame when the economy goes south - just ask Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush.
But I'm to believe that is something he actively wants? Give me a break. Obama isn't nearly as stupid or evil as you make him out to be.

(32,139 posts)There we go again.
The predictable trump card of insult, to which all these discussions inevitably descend.
No, it's not about Obama, or about "Obama haters." It's not about his legacy. It's not even about his beautiful wife and children, although you can be assured that they will all be well taken care of for the rest of their lives as a result of his service.
It's about policy, and who drives it. It's about the purchase of governments by banks and global corporations. It's about the real power and money now behind this nation and this empire, and how they are using our government to build and restructure and refine a system that will perpetuate that wealth and power and continue to grow it, long after Obama has left office.
That's what it's about.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)How else am I supposed to take someone who believes Obama is secretly sabotaging the economy for some political third way bullshit that only exists in your mind? That's what you're rambling on and on and on about - Obama drew up the sequester to push austerity and in the process wreck the economy.
Regardless of the fact his entire presidency is invested in the economy and if it goes into the tank, so does his legacy and his ability to get anything done. If Obama was that evil...if Obama wanted so badly to fuck over every poor person, he would have just announced he wasn't running for president and let the Republicans ruin the economy on their own and then his legacy could stay intact. But because he won reelection, he has an interest in the economy not tanking considering IT WOULD DO HIM IN.
The Obama derangement syndrome is so bad that you are trying to push this bullshit, absolutely insane theory that Obama is evil enough to suicide bomb his own presidency for cuts to appease the real power players.
And you say you're not an Obama hater? If you're not ... then you've got more problems than you're willing to accept.
