No.22 Prison Camp,
Hoeryong, DPRK
Forced Labor camps in North Korea came into being after World War II when Japanese colonial rule over the region ended. Japanese collaborators, landowners, and remaining families of those who fled to the South were among the first prisoners. It is reported that North Korea is running as many as six different political and forced labor camps. The North Korean government denies the existence of such camps, and little information about the prison camps can be found. What the world knows has been taken from accounts by former guards and prisoners who have defected. Satellite imagery of alleged prison locations show no distinctive markings. The camps are not surrounded by walls, but reportedly, the prison camps encompass areas as large as Washington DC.
Condemned by the international human rights community, most of these camps are located in central North Korea far away from Russian and Chinese borders in rugged mountain terrain. There is speculation as to the exact numbers of prisoners being held in these facilities, but it is believed to number in the hundred thousands.
Accounts from former prisoners and guards indicate forced laborers mine coal, make uniforms for the military, work in reprocessing factories, and farm. Reportedly, the prisoners themselves, are treated harshly. The prisoners are fed a diet of corn powder, cabbage leafs, and salt. Both defectors and human rights groups assert prisoners at North Korean camps are routinely beaten and used as a free economic tool by the regime.

(43,182 posts)If he had gone over there to attempt to negotiate the release of political prisioners, a la Bill Clinton, that's one thing.
But to just pal around with Kim Jon Un, which appears to be his sole goal?
Just bizzare and insulting IMHO.

(117 posts)Some of you guys know absolutely nothing about negotiating. The OP is worried about forced labor camps in NK but I will asked How many prisoners have been released with our strict approach to NK? my guess is zero(non americans)
Now think of a man who probably has nothing more than his charm and celebrity to offer the NK leader. Maybe he is trying to befriend him first before making any demands whatsoever. Get him to believe you are his friend and you 2 share a lot in common and maybe you your way into his heart and get him to make some changes. Some people double down when you threaten them.
Not sure what the end goal is but I know it is way too soon to dismiss his efforts

(3,526 posts)....special purpose "facilities" in other countries, along with a domestic prison population of approximately 2.3 million. Although the US has less than 5% of the world's population, it holds almost a quarter of the world's prisoners.
Rodman may be "a fucking tool and a joke", but we have our own issues we need to clean up before we get overly critical of some other country. What's next...."Dear Leader Fries"?

(37,364 posts)has been shut off from the world? Do you send the head of our government or the VP or the SOS? No, you gain access and good will by sending a sports figure. Not to negotiate directly but to provide a face saving nod. You can bet Rodman will be debriefed on his visit when he returns. He will be able to provide some info from direct contact with a man the west has had virtually no contact with to date. NK has been belligerent in the face of all the embargos and sanctions and cold shoulders of the world. It's people are starving. Perhaps this younger leader can be taught how to join the rest of the world. It is an effort worth the try.
