U.S. supports political solution to unrest in Syria: White HouseEnglish.news.cn 2012-01-31 04:42:48
WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- The White House said on Monday that the United States supports a political solution that stops the violence in Syria.
White House spokesman Jay Carney made the comment in response to a question about Syrian government's willingness to participate in Moscow-mediated talks to resolve the crisis facing the Arab nation.
He said, "Well, we don't have details at this point on that meeting. But in general we support efforts to reach a political solution that stops the violence in Syria. We're intensely discussing with the Russians the real deterioration on the ground in Syria and the very disturbing rise in violence there," he said at a regular news briefing.
"We're discussing with the Russians and other partners how best to use all the levers at the command of the international community and the United Nations to press the Syrian government to stop its appalling and ultimately ineffective and harmful repression."

Syria is perfect for a pipeline for Kurdistan oil as with the pipeline from the Kirkuk oil field in Iraq to the Syrian port of Baniyas.
You could be right that Israel doesn't care what happens in Syria but I really doubt it.

(12,231 posts)without dictating US foreign policy. For example, Syria or the government of Syria can care about what happens in Syria without dictating US foreign policy. On the other hand, there could be hundreds of people in Syria who eat bagels, so maybe Syria does secretly control US foreign policy. You know how these things work.

(12,231 posts)It sounds as though you are assuming that, from the point of view of Israel, Syria's current government is the worst possible government. If that assumption is true, then I would think that you would want to cut Israel some slack.

If yes, then at least you support equal treatment of governments that repress minorities.
If not, then you oppose Syrias repression but support Israels repression
I believe Israel was involved in W. Bush's decision to invade Iraq and I'll cut them zero slack.

(12,231 posts)Is the government of Syria focusing its rage on any particular minority group? I had the impression that the government of Syria is engaging in equal-opportunity repression of anybody who openly protests against the political status quo, regardless of how peaceful the protest is. Please note that I'm not claiming that there are no repressed minorities in Syria. I simply don't see what the current unrest in Syria has to do with repressing a minority group.
