The Thing about Being a Little Black Girl in the World: For Quvenzhané WallisThe thing about being a little black girl in the world is that you come into it already expected to be less than you almost certainly are, the genius and radiant darkness you possess already set up to be overlooked, dismissed or erased by almost everyone you will ever meet.
The thing about being a little black girl in the world is that even when you are everything, some people will want you to be nothing. They will look at you through the nothing-colored glasses they will put on every time you enter a room. And the bigness of you, the outstandingness, the giftedness, will be invisible to them.
The thing about being a little black girl in the world who is already, at nine years old, confident enough to demand that lazy, disrespectful reporters call you by your name, is that most people will not understand the amount of comfort in one's own skin it takes to do that, will not be able to grasp the sheer fierceness of it, the boldness, the certainty, the love for yourself, and will not be blown away at seeing you do it, though they should be.
The thing about being a little black girl in the world is that your right to be a child, to be small and innocent and protected, will be ignored and you will be seen as a tiny adult, a tiny black adult, and as such will be susceptible to all the offenses that people two and three and four times your age are expected to endure.
But take heart.

(12,041 posts)Don't get me wrong, Jennifer Lawrence is a great actress as well, but Quvenzhane Wallis gave the kind of performance that you can never forget. For a six year old to bring the level of emotional intensity to the role that she did is absolutely amazing. And yes, I know she is nine years old now, but she was only six when the movie was filmed.
Beasts of the Southern Wild was the best movie of the year, Argo was very good too but Beasts of the Southern Wild was totally original and was the type of movie I could watch again and again, I hope to see Wallis go far in the future.

(12,041 posts)Barack Obama recommended the movie for all ages which kind of surprised me because despite the fact that the story centers on a child it is certainly not a kid's movie, it is very dark and depressing and it could scare young children. Seeing how Michelle described the movie makes me better understand why Barack recommended it for kids however, we can't shield our kids from every thing that is difficult to watch because life is often difficult to watch and you can't shield kids from life. Beasts of the Southern Wild may not be an easy movie for kids to watch, but it is a movie they can gain a greater understanding of the world from. I still would say it is an adult movie however because there is a lot of symbolism that kids won't understand. The heart of the movie is really about climate change and Hurricane Katrina, but kids won't get that at all because neither Katrina or climate change are ever directly mentioned you need to know current events to pick up the major themes of the movie. Kids will see a totally different movie about a young girl who survives in a harsh world, but even if they don't get the metaphors they can still see a great piece of art.

(12,041 posts)I don't think the reporter meant any harm with that comment, although I would not be surprised if they called her Annie because they don't know how to pronounce her real name.
