Best Picture: Argo.
Best Director: Spielberg (Lincoln)
Best Actress : Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis (Lincoln)
Best Actress Supporting Roll: Ann Hathaway Les Misérables
Best Actor Supporting Roll: Christoph Waltz Django Unchained
The rest
hmmm would just all be a wild guess. Think Ben Affleck should have been nominated for best director but didn't. Argo was politically correct from the beginning of the movie, Zero Dark Thirty was not. Loved Beasts Of The Southern Wild, Diango Unchained, Les Misérables too.
I've seen all of the movies nominated for best picture ... what do you think?

Lincoln is a non controversial choice.

(6,823 posts)now I'm thinking Argo in winning the Golden Globe, and setting the tone for awhile ... above Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty, moved it into the progressive hollywood mindset ... which I have no problem with. We shall see.

Best Actress : Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook)
Best Actor: Denzel Washington (Flight)
Best Actress Supporting Roll: Haven't seen Les Mis yet.
Best Actor Supporting Roll: Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook)

(36,063 posts)in sports?
I saw the movie. It was good, though I thought with some unevenness. And I'll admit that I haven't figured out if that unevenness was a consequence of truly artful movie making (reflecting the unevenness of life with emotional dysfunction) or if the movie makers were just unable to sustain the quality of the film's better moments--such as the scenes of 'Pat' in the first nights back home--the irrational responses and the fear of neighbor's taking notice.
Setting aside seeing the movie as themes around mental illness, some of which were too obvious... I thought that the movie is an interesting "period-piece" that has now immortalized in film much of current American pop-culture interests. I wonder if the movie's popularity can't be seen as the films producers/investors taking advantage of American's interest in recreational voyeurism of interpersonal dysfunction (as in "housewives 0f___" , "16 and pregnant", "Hoarders", etc), competitive dancing, sports fanaticism, etc..
I understand Chris Matthew's interest because of its Philadelphia connection, because the SO similarly loves "The Fugitive" because parts of it were filmed in the Pullman neighborhood she lived in during 50s' and early '60's'.
I wonder if the tail-gating scenes and tv game-watching scenes provide a similar 'connection' for sports fans and if that could be part of the movie's appeal?
doublethink
(6,823 posts)My mom (82) is really into Dancing With The Stars ... me sports and by nature a hopeless romantic etc... along with being a bit neurotic at times ... ... so no wonder I really like Silver Linings Playbook!

(11,464 posts)Picture-Argo. Which was NOT historically correct as the CIA gets the credit, when it was Canada that should have gotten more of the credit.
LINCOLN should be the best movie of the year, as it was the best movie of the year.
Argo was like an old ABC movie of the week on TV. It was just not out of the ordinary,
and oddly enough, would not win without George Clooney being the producer, and the snub for Affleck as director(who didn't deserve it anyhow).
If Affleck was so good, he would have gotten the votes. Period.End of story. He didn't.
Because he is not seen by other directors as a great director. He is adequate.
And I disagree with your view about Zero Dark Thirty, which showed torture did NOT work.
Don't think Affleck is a very good actor, never did and don't think Arkin should have been nominated.
BUT they say write in votes do not count and will be tossed. IF alot of people write Ben's name in, this could directly affect the eventual winner of the Director actor and give it to someone other than Spielberg. It appears they are holding it against Spielberg(how stupid at that).
Director-MIchael HANEKE who will be the receipient of the above protest against Spielberg
taking it out on him that Affleck wasn't nominated, though that is insane.
Actress-Emmanuelle Riva and it's her birthday today too. Think this will be the surprise of the night. Well deserved if she wins. Lawrence and Chastain will win other years.
Actor-Daniel Day Lewis, the only sure shot of the night. He was Lincoln.
Supporting Actress should be Sally Field, will be Anne Hathaway, but it was the song that wins, because anyone could have been in that role and done the same and sang the same.
Anne had a good agent to get her the role. Who would ever have thought 99 would win an Oscar.
Supporting Actor-
could be Waltz, one of my favorites for many years prior to his USA debut, could be Tommy Lee Jones who deserves it, could be
Robert Deniro.
SHOULD be Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of the best living actors in America if not the world.
But he should have been nominated for Best Actor, he was the movie.Without him no movie.
Who will it be? Depends on how far Lincoln does or doesn't sweep.
I will go with Hoffman in an upset. But anyone but Arkin deserves this award.
Maybe there will be a tie, been years since there was one.
Song- skyfall from the James Bond movie.
Foreign Film- Amour.
Should have been nominated-Frank Langella for Robot and Frank.
Are they ever going to give Frank Langella an Oscar?
Or will he be the next Cary Grant, Peter O'Toole, Richard Burton, Alfred Hitchcock, Peter Sellers
who never won a real Oscar.

(11,464 posts)This was a very odd year in that there were 7 major directors movies(if not more).
Like 2000, when Al Gore lost solely because of Ralph nader's interference and tossing the election.
Put in all those things and it skwers the vote that if only two choices would have been different.
And those awards happened after the nominations were Affleck was snubbed.
So this was a protest vote. Especially with the whole publicist drawn media making it an all out war.
Reminds me of Shakespeare in Love. There is not one person I know who thought that should win.
Yet Spielberg was screwed as he usually is. Sucks to be so talented.
Now, I would use that silly line at the end of Argo to describe my feelings should Argo win best picture.
But I will be glad to see President Carter get his due. They should have him be there to accept the award with George Clooney. (who has more Oscars in different categories than anyone except Walt Disney.)
In 1997, I would have given the Screenplay Oscar to "Boogie Nights".
Not Good will hunting.
This year, hoping Original Screenplay goes either to Amour or Moonrise Kingdom.

(63,912 posts)too legendary for the snub. And "Raging Bull" was a LONG time ago.
However, I was less impressed than a lot of people with his acting but I didn't care for the movie that much so my opinion is prejudiced. I did like Tommy Lee Jones in "Lincoln" but I like him a lot in everything he does...again, my personal prejudice.

(34,179 posts)The rich and famous are going to get together to throw a self congratulatory party for themselves.
There will be some "scandalous" clothing that will be breathlessly reported.
Some popular movie will get the majority of the awards.
Some popular movie will be shunned.
Pundits will compare, contrast and argue about the winner and losers for a few days.
Then Hollywood will go back to making the same pabulum that they've been cranking out for years and decades, with the few rare exceptions.
Rinse, Lather and Repeat next year.
