'Finger-in-chili woman' back in trouble

11:28 PST SAN JOSE, CALIF —

The woman who made up a story about finding a severed finger in a bowl of chili at a Wendy's restaurant in San Jose, Calif. has concocted yet another tale, this time about her son being shot, authorities said Friday.

Anna Ayala, 47, and her son, Guadalupe Reyes, 26, who live separately in San Jose, hatched a plan to blame an innocent man for shooting Reyes in his left ankle, when in fact Reyes accidentally shot himself, police said.

Reyes lied because he is a convicted burglar who is not supposed to have a gun, investigators said. Ayala allegedly backed him up.

"She has a history of manipulating the system to her benefit, and this is another example of that," said Bret Wasley, a Santa Clara County deputy district attorney.

On Oct. 21, police found Reyes suffering from a gunshot wound outside his home on Michigan Avenue. His mother was standing over him, police said. The two identified the shooter as a 25-year-old man from the area.
