Last edited Sat Feb 23, 2013, 08:09 AM - Edit history (1)
In a statement to Reuters today, Vatican officials announced that Joseph Ratzinger will remain a permanent resident of Vatican City after his resignation. Doing so will offer him legal protection from any attempt to prosecute him in connection with sexual abuse cases around the world, Church sources said today"His continued presence in the Vatican is necessary, otherwise he might be defenseless".
This startling admission of guilt by the church is also a direct obstruction of justice, and lends more weight to the charge by the ITCCS and others that the Vatican has arranged with the Italian government to shield Ratzinger from criminal prosecution, in violation of international laws ratified by Italy.
The Pope will remain a citizen of the Vatican City and therefore have immunity from prosecution within Italy, which upholds the Lateran Pacts from 1929 with the Holy See, and which established the Vatican City as a sovereign state. Pope Benedict XVI will become the first Pope to resign his Papacy since the 1414 resignation of Pope Gregory XII, and he will become the first to voluntarily quit his post as leader of the Catholic Church since Pope Celestine V in 1294.
Leaving the Vatican and Italy could result in the ex-Pope's arrest, since several countries have made plans to charge him with crimes, and possibly turn him over to an International court for prosecution. He will have no immunity if he leaves the Vatican City and Italy.

Finally people are taking seriously the idea that international laws were broken to protect child abusers from justice, and there is a paper trail putting this guy in the loop.
That's my hunch.

Just look at all the priests here in the United States who have been shuffled around like checkers, once abuse claims come out.
And, look at Bernard Law, who is spending his retirement in Vatican City. Maybe he and Ratz can play shuffleboard together.
Meanwhile, survivors have to go broke -- mentally, physically, financially -- trying to get the justice they deserve, and which would be readily available if the Roman Catholic Church weren't the main player. This bullshit of just shipping criminals off to some safe haven has to stop, Lateran Pact or not.
Have I mentioned lately just how much I despise the RCC?

My wish would be to see all the perps humiliated and in jail, and the assets of the Vatican divided amongst victims and individual churches. Personally, for all the wealth they sit on, I don't think the RCC does enough for the poor and sick, certainly not without strings attached.

(14,061 posts)...which formed when the Boston scandal hit. I became friends with a lot of survivors and the stories they told were heartbreaking. One man said that all he wanted was an apology. Never got it. Instead, he and his family were stonewalled at every turn by the Church and its lawyers.
In my opinion, statutes of limitation for sexual abuse, especially sexual abuse of a minor, should never run out. Just like those for murder. In a lot of ways, sexual abuse is akin to murder in that in some cases it does destroy lives, and in all cases changes them permanently. But guess who fights the hardest and longest whenever statutes of limitation and/or mandatory reporter amendments are brought up in state legislatures?
Ilsa
(61,695 posts)Survivors. As a victim of sexual assault (not related to RCC), it basically stole 4 years of my life from me, and altered it forever. And I had adult capacity to deal with it, unlike a child.
I was listening to part of HBO's Mea Culpa documentary. It sounded like one priest who was seeking justice for victims ended up using the confessional as an opening for their case, since the statute of limitations on anything involving The Confessional doesn't run out for the RCC. I don't know exactly how it worked, however. But the priest said the Vatican (Cardinal Ratzinger) finally agreed a year later to open that particular case.

No wonder the Church thinks it's above the law -- because it is, apparently. Time to rethink the Lateran Pacts.
Just like with Bernard Law -- if higher-ups are threatened with jail time, ship their asses off to the Vatican. Totally unacceptable. These are CRIMES that have to be answered to.

(5,763 posts)They just changed its name. The word "Inquisition" sounded too negative. I can't think why.
Back when he was still known as Cardinal Ratzinger (or Cardinal Rat) Pope Benny was the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, and the previous name for that outfit was Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, AKA the Roman Inquisition or The Holy Inquisition.
Compared to what it was in previous centuries, the Inquisition is rather toothless. Except it can and has defrocked and excommunicated many Catholic scholars and clergy who haven't towed the Vatican's line. It looks for ideological purity.
People who think the Church has changed from the middle ages are wrong. It hasn't. It's just painted over the rust and rot. If it had the same control today as it had in the Middle Ages-- and its trying to get it back-- it would behave the very same way.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/21/pope-mexico-trip-2012_n_1369227.html
The documentation has been compiled in a book "La voluntad de no saber" ("The will to not know" , which is co-authored by Jose Barba, a former Legion priest who along with other priests in 1998 brought a church trial against the Legion's founder, the Rev. Marciel Maciel, for having sexually abused them while they were seminarians.
And here is an indication of at least some of Benedict's culpability:
Maciel, meanwhile, continued to enjoy Pope John Paul II's highest regard as the founder of one of the world's fastest-growing religious orders, able to attract money and vocations to the church despite the mounting accusations against him. John Paul admired the Legion's orthodoxy and discipline qualities which set it apart from many other religious orders and made it attractive to many of Mexico's political and financial elite who sent their children to the Legion's schools and seminaries.
Benedict took over the Legion in 2010 after the order finally admitted Maciel had molested seminarians and fathered three children with two women. A Vatican investigation determined Maciel, who died in 2008, was a religious fraud who had built an order based on silence and obedience that allowed his double life to go unchecked.
That's only a hint. Maciel was so close to the Vatican and the papacy, but was such a good rainmaker, that it's hard to believe the Vatican didn't know.
Don't you think it should at least be investigated? I'm not talking about convicting the guy if he's innocent (but incompetent), but isn't there enough to at least look closer?
Do you consider that Ronald Reagan would have been a "Trophy" in Iran Contra? Or even Nixon in Watergate?
Apparently, people are so used to iniquity that justice seems like too much trouble now.

2Th 2:1 Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,
2Th 2:2 That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.
2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
2Th 2:5 Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?
2Th 2:6 And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.
2Th 2 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way.
( Pope Benedict XVI Resigns )
2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed ( Sins of Pope Benedict XVI ) , whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
2Th 2 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
2Th 2:13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth:
2Th 2:14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Vatican Goes Cash Only Because of Lack of Money-Laundering Controls
If youre planning a trip to the Vatican, be sure to take cash.
Since Wednesday, museums and businesses in the Holy See have been declining credit card and debit card purchases following a decision by the Bank of Italy that is reportedly linked to concerns over inadequate money-laundering controls.
Cash machines have also been shut down after the Italian central bank refused authorization for Deutsche Banks Italian unit to continue operating services it provided within the Vaticans walls.
An Italian treasury official said last month that the Vatican could no longer use the services of Italian-based banks in the light of new rules against money laundering, according to Vatican Radio.
The Bank of Italy could not give the authorization because the Vatican, apart from not respecting money-laundering regulation, did not have the legal prerequisites, Reuters reported, quoting a source close to the Bank of Italy....
