Cruz was surprised to win his Senate seat. He only ran to raise his profile for the actual office he wants, Attorney General of Texas. He started a PAC to raise money for this goal several years ago. Whatever the roots of the demonstrable character flaws he has been flaunting may be, he is doing it to burnish his creds with the Texas GOP base, so he can return home after his term ends and run for statewide office.

He sucks, but he'll be going back to Texas in five years. Maybe he'll change his mind and try to run for president, which I devoutly hope he does, but at the present time he is doing what he's doing so he can win backing for the gig he really wants back home.

I don't think there is ANYTHING they could do, other than support Obama, that would cause the GOP base to stop supporting him.

Unfortunately, Texas is still in a world where any republican can get elected. The Dem really had no chance. I pray that that changes, and changes soon. I do not care about the jokes about Texas, but I do care what happens to its citizens. Right now not much good is happening to/for them, and it is heartbreaking to watch.
