In my mailbox today...from my BIL, the MD...

Many of us have wondered how you can avoid GMO food since it is not labeled as such. Some of us in Colorado are pushing for an initiative
to require labeling. Labeling is done in most European countries already so it really will not be a burden for the manufacturers.

So I recently came across this information and wanted to share it.

I have vetted the website and verified this information.
In the users guide on approximately page 7 this information is spelled out in detail if you care to look it up below.

The take home message ==> if it starts with an 8 and has five digits it is GMO!!

there are things like wind, animals, humans, bees (however many we have left), birds, etc. that carry pollen or whatever from genetically modified stuff to the organic stuff and the organic stuff no longer remains organic. Same with conventionally grown stuff.

The Supreme Court opinion in the Geerston Farms v. Monsanto case explains a lot about it. I imagine that the original complaint filed in district court by Geerston did as well, but I did not read the complaint, only the opinion.

All documents in the Geerston case are listed and linked here http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/monsanto-company-v-geertson-seed-farms/

A summary of the case is also at the above link.

There is a new case against Monsanto, too, Organic Seed Growers and Trade Association et al v. Monsanto

http://www.thomhartmann.com/forum/2013/01/family-farmers-continue-fight-landmark-lawsuit-against-monsanto-message-4-has-link-cas

Sadly, I do not expect the Supreme Court to be any more helpful this time than it was to Geerston.

You may already know about everything in this post, but everyone who comes across your thread may not know it.

But again, you've posted very helpful info in terms of doing as best we can with the reality that we have been handed by our government and by Monsanto and others.

Thank you.

GMO foods can use the 4-digit code.

The 4-digit code is generic, in this graphic's case "banana". It says nothing about how that banana was grown or whether or not it's GMO.

Organic foods will always have the 5-digit-starting-with-9 code so that they can charge more.

Since GMO food doesn't have a price premium, they may stick a 4-digit code on it.

This system is voluntary and unreliable at the moment.

Price Lookup Codes are good for only one thing.. Looking up prices.
