Looks like one of the Robinson brothers from Free Republic has gone missing (still offline)

Latest update on Facebook about the "new server" so that they can get back online (after 2 days):

"Thank you all very much for your patience, but I'm still waiting to hear the latest from John myself. I'm guessing he's up to his eye balls in computer parts and hasn't had the time to call or write." (Jim Robinson, rimjob, referring to his brother, John Robinson, who also "runs" Free Republic).

And a response from a freeper:

"I am curious. JR gets $350,000 a year in donations, plus $46,000 in veterans benefits from taxpayers. That's $1000/DAY. Where does the money go? $1000 a day pays for a LOT of servers and bandwidth. Begging for more money (needs $7k for a server?) while not accounting for the previous $$ smells like scam."

Hilarious!

Hey guys, it takes a lot of money to pay me and John to run a text only website like FR. We also don't allow videos. If we did, we would have to have a freepathon every week instead of every month. We're telling all of our members that the server crashed and it could cost us thousands and thousands of dollars and for them to get out there credit-cards pronto. We need the MONEY!!!

If you've ever tried to post anything at FR, you know the endless hoops we make folks jump through. It's all about organization, which by the way never seems to work, but hell, who cares; it makes people think we're running a well organized website. Some of those buttons on our site are only there for looks (don't press-um). And the boxes you use to post comments, well, ours is setup with the least amount of features possible. Matter fact, we make our members learn HTML just to be able to post in italics. By the time you've jumped through all the hoops just to post a comment, you've probably forgotten what the hell you were going to write. Just send in your dollar to this weeks freepathon fundraiser and chear with us as the meeter goes sideways!! Cause even though our site looks and works like crap, we love your money!

It is like cutting edge technology with all those scsi hamsters.

And your backups must be amazing. My team of engineers at chase handled 5000 servers and we would always go to your site when you had problems and learn how you fixed up things. We never thought of driving to San Jose or taking old parts from old machines instead of just, you know, buying parts and having them on hand before time. We had a depot full of parts just sitting there, think of the things we could have done with that money, not to mention the space we needed to keep them all.

And backups? Lord, we wasted so much time on those - first with tape then drive arrays via fiber optic, when all we had to do was just figure out a smart way, like you are doing, to get information off a dead drive. We took the wimpy way out, not the manly tech god way.

You are a visionary that makes people like me realize we are in a mental wheelchair when it comes to technology when compared to your crack team.
