Indiana school suspends (separate prom) teacher over anti-gay remarks

SULLIVAN, Ind. - An Indiana teacher whose comment that she believes gays have no purpose in life has been suspended amid tighter security at her school.

Superintendent Mark Baker of the Northeast School Corp. in western Indiana's Sullivan County issued a statement Wednesday saying the teacher has been placed on administrative leave and that state and local police are stationing officers at North Central Junior-Senior High School as a precaution because of "aggressive" email messages sent to the school and the teacher.

Baker did not identify the teacher, but special education teacher Diana Medley's comments have circulated widely on social networking sites amid news coverage of an alternative prom dance at a nearby school that would ban gay students.

"We don't agree with it (homosexuality), and it's offensive to us," Medley told reporters. "Homosexual students come to me with their problems, and I don't agree with them, but I care about them. It's the same thing with my special needs kids. I think God puts everyone in our lives for a reason."

Which will effectively cancel her career in public education, or any other that adheres to oversight.

This person should be kept away from children, who generally have no biases except those taught to them by adults.

8. Yes, our culture is really not well. Teachers at least have a professional responsibility that can

provide a legal handle by means of which to get a grip on some of this behavior in more public forums.

I don't like the fact that parents and family members appear to own their kin, legally, even if they aren't good for them. Not trying to minimize that here. I simply don't have a good idea what can be done to about it, other than to get the right kinds of teachers and learning environments and to authentically commit as early as possible to individually appropriate accountable and adaptive responses to those who are at risk

10. What takes a teacher six hours to build up in a child a parent can destroy in six seconds

by saying "I don't give a shit. I don't care" or by demanding even more by saying what they did was not good enough.

The worst thing most kids can have is a parent. . .and i truly believe that. Right kinds of teachers and learning environments won't help if the parents destroy it at home.

Happens with the arts and sports all the time. How many kids are really into it, only to have their parents say "so few people do well at it to make it a career. . .don't get your hopes up, kid?" Teachers say do anything and reach for the stars. Parents say "those stars are not for you."

and well and fully functioning with all forms of enrichment, so when children reach their majority, and can get away from those people, and on throughout everyone's lives there are ALWAYS resources for additional growth and development available. That is, cradle-to-grave appropriate, comprehensive, free, authentic learning resources (and I don't mean only computers), available 8a-8p, 6 days a week, except for holidays, paid for with American taxes. Be more selective about professional standards for teachers and offer them all kinds of partial contracts. Break up schedules, so you can have much smaller class sizes. Academic, Arts, Skills, Trades, Crafts, and Health-Physical Education curricula.
