(17,505 posts)I recently had a "discussion" with a RWer about this. His call on owning an assault rifle was:
"What if the Russians are invading and coming up my drive. If I only have a shot gun, I won't be able to take any of them out before they get me...."
The Russians????
I said. "Cute adolescent fantasy, but in the real world elementary school children are being shot dead. Join us in the real world"
Sounds like excuses to hate the black man in the White House to me....lame excuses....

(6,440 posts)He said in his Sparky's List email that he didn't have the space to refute the Glib Sociopath's arguments point by point. Fair enough, but an unfortunate side-effect is that the toon mostly consists of Glibby making his case in great detail with the only rebuttal being an (admittedly hilarious) snark by Sparky in the last panel. It does rather count, therefore, on the reader already agreeing that those arguments are nuts, whereas what normally makes Tom so great as a cartoonist is his refusal to preach to the choir, dissecting RWNJ arguments with forensic skill. Just my $0.02.

(6,119 posts)I doubt TT would be able to persuade them to understand the of the error of their ways in a 6 panel comic strip. He isn't trying to. He seems to be making a funny for the choir he is preaching to. I see your $.02 and raise you a nickel

(32,723 posts)The Republicans engaged in revisionist history to try to take one of the most corrupt administrations in history and turn it into a utopia.
They constantly talk about taxes as a jobs issue. They are STILL trying to claim the ONLY reason there is unemployment is because the private sector is overtaxed and over-regulated and Unions are making too many demands. It's the broken record played during the Reagan Years and they are in a panic that the Reagan lies aren't working anymore now that there is a generation of voters born after that senile old fuck was long gone.

(54,041 posts)He rounded up the guns in Czechoslovakia, France, and Poland, obviously but Hitler was pro-gun ownership. As a German citizen, you could even own a machine gun! As you can imagine, not everyone was allowed to get a gun, such as Jews, communists, the Roma, and Janey (cause what would her daddy do?).
from Wikipedia
The 1938 German Weapons Act, the precursor of the current weapons law, superseded the 1928 law. As under the 1928 law, citizens were required to have a permit to carry a firearm and a separate permit to acquire a firearm. Furthermore, the law restricted ownership of firearms to "...persons whose trustworthiness is not in question and who can show a need for a (gun) permit." But under the new law:
- Gun restriction laws applied only to handguns, not to long guns or ammunition. The 1938 revisions completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as was the possession of ammunition."
- The legal age at which guns could be purchased was lowered from 20 to 18.
- Permits were valid for three years, rather than one year.
- The groups of people who were exempt from the acquisition permit requirement expanded. Holders of annual hunting permits, government workers, and NSDAP members were no longer subject to gun ownership restrictions. Prior to the 1938 law, only officials of the central government, the states, and employees of the German Reichsbahn Railways were exempted.
- Jews were forbidden from the manufacturing or dealing of firearms and ammunition. (Well, yeah, there's that)
- Under both the 1928 and 1938 acts, gun manufacturers and dealers were required to maintain records with information about who purchased guns and the guns' serial numbers. These records were to be delivered to a police authority for inspection at the end of each year.
On November 11, 1938, the Minister of the Interior, Wilhelm Frick, promulgated Regulations Against Jews' Possession of Weapons. This regulation effectively deprived Jews of the right to possess firearms or other weapons.
