ALBANY, N.Y. - Albany police arrested an elementary school parent Friday morning for allegedly exposing herself during a school assembly.
Police say officers responded to the North Albany Academy, located at 570 North Pearl Street, around 10:30 a.m. for a report of a person exposing herself inside the school.
When officers arrived, school staff told them that a parent, 24-year-old Aydrea Meaders of Albany, got onto the stage during an assembly in the school's cafeteria and began to dance.
"It had been going as a terrific event. The cafeteria was full. We probably had about 200 students in there from throughout the school," said Ron Lesko of the Albany School District.

(1,484 posts)What blew my mind was that the Albany "news" team billed it as a "Top" Story. Just imagine the local new's response if the "story" had occurred in, say, Berkeley.

(4,451 posts)If I took my grand kids to a public beach and there was a topless woman there it wouldn't matter, but if I went to their grade-school and saw a naked adult dancing in the cafeteria I'd have a real problem with that.

(38,325 posts)Clearly, as an adult supervising the kids you escort the woman out and you have some responsibility to figure out what's going on and then deal with it appropriately, but that's where the problem ends. Let the social workers deal with the problem. All the kids need to know, if they even ask, is that somebody's mom got a little crazy, but she's getting help now.
I saw weirder stuff than that as a kid and my parents never made a big deal of it. We raised our own kids the same way. My own kids are over 21 now, but when they were young and we were visiting San Francisco or any of my crazy relatives we never knew what they might see.
Funniest thing I ever saw was my great-grandma's mean old rooster chasing my naked grandpa across the pasture. He'd been skinny dipping in the canal and the rooster got between him and his clothes so he decided to make a mad dash for the house.
The weirdest thing we ever saw with our kids was that naked guy who inflates his scrotum as some kind of protest, I don't remember what. But don't google that if you are squeamish... what has been seen cannot be unseen.

(3,557 posts)there is even a page about it on wikipedia! Apparently they do it with either gas or saline solution and risk include gangrene!
Speaking of nudity and seeing naked people... When I was 11 or 12 I went to Quebec on a camping trip with my grandfather. We stayed for a few nights at a camp ground and were the English speaking minority there. One of the most glorious days of my pre-teen years was when I saw a group of girls my age get out of the pool, strip out of their bathing suites right in front of me and put on their dry clothes like it was no big deal. It was one of the best moments of my childhood.
Then again you have to realize that our country was founded by all of the puritan religious rejects that were booted out of Europe. When I was in the Army I had an office job for a while where I worked as an administrator on the largest live-fire training range in Europe. We had lot of officials from other foreign militaries come through our facility and I worked with a lot of guys from all over the world. A lot of the foreigners would ask me if Americans were as stupid as some of the news articles they saw made us look. I always answered "yes" and explained "that crazy stupid excessively religious neighbor that your great great great great grandfather had who moved to America was my great great great great grandfather".

(2,252 posts)Protesting via nudity. Doukhobors.
Immortalized in song by Malvina Reynolds, 'Do As the Doukhobors Do":
There's a new tactic to use, my dear,
If you have a protest no one wants to hear,
Just attend a rally where the big shots meet
Strip to your hide and walk down the street.
Way up in Canada, Doukhobor lads
Were sent to public schools disapproved of by their dads,
So the Doukhobor mamas said "That's enough"
And they went to the meeting in the buff.
Chorus:
Do as the Doukhobors do, honey,
Do as the Doukhobors do.
If public policy gets on your nerves
And no one pays attention to you
Throw away your dresses and your lingerie too,
And do as the Doukhobors do.
Our women hold meetings to stop atom tests,
They're not afraid of billy clubs, cops and arrests,
They sign those petitions 'til they're sad in the face
And still they seem to be getting no place.
The little boat EVERYMAN couldn't leave port,
Bomb tests continue of every sort
We've got to do something that's wild and new,
And do as the Doukhobors do.
(Chorus)
Of course, down in Cannes on the coast of France,
You'd get no attention minus bras and pants,
If you'd hit the beach in a grin or less,
They'd think you had on last year's bathing dress.
But up there in Canada at twenty below
People keep covered from head to toe.
Kennedy would send a cup of coffee or two
If we did as the Doukhobors do.

(10,960 posts)The one count for public lewdness is fine, but seven counts of of "Endangering the Welfare of a Child"???
I will assume there were seven kids on stage or something... or seven just sounded like a lucky number.
The practice of charging people with as much or as little as somebody feels like is despicable. This woman faces anything from nothing but a stern talking to all the way up to what? Anywhere from 8 years to life?

(90,773 posts)THEY'RE the ones I feel worst for. Other kids' parents can explain this any way they want, but her own kids have to live with this damage the entire rest of their school days, because I guarantee you nobody who saw that (or heard about it in gory detail) will ever forget it. Ever.
The Meaders children are in for a rough ride, poor little things.
