I remember once seeing a fireball fly over my house one night.

It was the damndest thing. I was pulling into to the driveway of my house one night, and I just happen to look up and see a very clear and distinct ball of fire hurdling through the air, right over my house.

I have no idea how far away it was, but it couldn't have been that far given how distinct it was.

I didn't hear or feel any impact, and even though the area around my house was heavily wooded, nothing caught fire, so whatever meteor or debris that it was must have burnt out before hitting the ground.

Has anyone else ever witnessed this in person?

I've seen a few in the Rockies. They lit up the night like a sunny day. One was even green! tridim Feb 2013 #2

Yes. Several years ago in a busy suburban shopping area. It was gigantic. Not just a meteor. Lint Head Feb 2013 #4

It was green and, like you, I could have sworn it was literally just feet above the houses. I even went looking in the neighborhood where I was sure it came down.

However, many years later I learned how far away these events can be seen, and how people from hundreds of miles away still think it is in their neighborhood. It's weird.

They usually burn up before hitting the ground.

I thought a plane had crashed. I heard of no reports on the radio or TV. I think I was the only one looking up at the time. It reminded me of the one in Russia only silent.

It went west to eat across the late afternoon sky. It was so large I thought I should be hearing something to go along with the visual, but just silence.

I thought "is this the beginning of the end?".

News reports later showed it to be a Russian satellite re-entering. It scattered parts across east Texas and Louisiana.

It was green and very bright, went from left to right in front of me, split in two and disappeared.
Whatever remained undoubtedly landed in the Atlantic...
