Oscar Pistorius:Athlete in court on murder charge. Will be held at police station until bail decided

South African Olympic and Paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius is appearing in court to face a murder charge after his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp, was shot at his home near Pretoria.

Mr Pistorius held his head in his hands and was in tears as the charge was read out in the magistrates' court.

Prosecutors have argued for a case of "premeditated murder".

A decision will need to be taken on bail, with prosecutors arguing that Mr Pistorius should remain in custody.

@barrybateman: #OscarPistorius Nair postpones the bail matter until Tuesday. Oscar is to kept at Brooklyn police station. BB

Being allowed to stay at a police station is not standard. Usually people are sent to a prison.

What a tragic hot mess..

Wow. They must have evidence to suggest it wasn't a simple lover's quarrel. I hope they do anyway, if that's what they're going with.

Very sad all around.

David Smith @SmithInAfrica (Africa correspondent of The Guardian newspaper (UK)) -- An advocate admitted to me Pistorius remaining in police station is due to fame not disability. "There are a lot of disabled people in jail"
