Some Orange high schools ban Valentine's Day exchanges

(FL) Some Orange high schools ban Valentine's Day exchanges

Putting a damper on what can be one of the most festive days for high-school students, at least two Orange County high schools are banning Valentine's Day gift exchanges.

Lake Nona High School Principal Margaret Nampon sent a message to parents Wednesday that students will not be allowed to carry balloons or other gifts such as teddy bears and flowers to class Thursday, Valentine's Day. Any students who arrive at school with those items will be required to leave them in the administrative offices during the school day. Deliveries will be rejected.

Lake Nona parent Bonnie Shear was outraged by the ban.

"We have to bring joy and happiness back to our kids," said Shear, citing episodes of school violence. "Valentine's Day is a way to do that."

Nampon's Connect Orange message to parents said students would not be allowed to exchange gifts "in order to maintain our instructional focus and avoid distraction."

boyfriend and she really wants to break up with him but the holiday is acting as a roadblock because she doesn't want to make him feel bad on the holiday and she doesn't want to be known as some kind of a evil person for breaking the ignorant young man's heart on the holiday. It's awkward. I don't believe schools should endorse, condone, or be in any way complicit in high-school hookups. Ban it nation-wide I say. If you want to celebrate love, do it after school.

The irritated curmudgeon is out!
