Apparently I'm using too much of my "unlimited" data plan on my phone (for the second time in five years) so they're threatening to throttle my download speeds. I think I can cut my usage significantly...by taking my business to another carrier.

(14,557 posts)much better it sounds then anything. I do have a fine set of vintage Sansui speakers; helps a lot.

(7,318 posts)No notice, though, like AT&T gave to their customers. All of a sudden, at about the 2 gig mark, my data speed slows down to a crawl. Doesn't matter what time of day/night either. Seems to be tied to a specific amount of data. Am ready to take them to small claims too, so I'm going to start documenting daily over the next few months to show the court when the slow down starts occuring. I'm pissed!

(146,218 posts)during times of high use (driven primarily by tourists), it seems to slow down more for us.

(6,286 posts)It used to be even better when they allowed commenting, because off-topic and trollish stuff was heavily policed, but something about their commenting system invited hacking and so they just deleted it. Now it's just straight up blog posts. The commenting was nice because people would share their experiences and expertise with the subject at hand.

(29,414 posts)you might also tell AT&T that you're supporting the FCC's plan to create free and unlimited WiFi for all residents of the country

(146,218 posts)We are hanging on to two of them like they are made of gold. We suspect that they throttle us at times (when traffic is heavy), but they are irreplaceable.

(146,218 posts)They really have no incentive to put up another tower.
We do have unlimited and fast data most of the time, particularly in the winter when the tourists aren't so numerous. We watch movies, TV series almost daily with little problem.
But, in the summer and particularly on weekends, it becomes unusable. I even canceled Netflix last summer.
I'm not really complaining. We are using the best option available to us.

(13,812 posts)It's spam plain and simple.
Considering we come in waaaaay under the "non-unlimited" package. I think they do this to piss you off so you do leave and lose your contract.

(4,205 posts)Then you need to fight them, if you are not under contract the best way is to drop them and go with a pay as you go plan... you can go to Amazon and get an unlocked smart phone pretty reasonably priced, then check around for BYOP (bring your own phone) plans, I have one phone on Straight Talk unlimited for 45 a month I also have 3 phones with Consumer Cellular which starts at 10 a month and goes from there, and I may add has great customer service that actually is located inside the US and you can actually talk to them and understand what they say the first time they say it...they will send you a SIM for your unlocked phone free and you can keep your same number. By buying your own unlocked phone you are not tied to any one company and can change any tiem you please. Love it

You may want to save your "smartphone" for dialing 911, Skype doesn't do that.
i pay $50 a month for my wifi hotspot and i have internet everywhere i go... even at home.

(7,318 posts)Am starting to document the slow-down (time of day/night doesn't matter) for a possible small claims action also. It's really making it difficult to get research done in a timely manner.

(75,480 posts)they usually manage to eventually buy out the carriers I'm using and I find myself back with them. I hate throttling. It's why I dumped my former ISP. Maybe a letter to your state and federal reps might help. I have had some success into getting those officials to look into unfair communications practices in my area and they have been fixed. Years ago we couldn't get local broadcast stations with our satellite TV. Yet cable didn't reach out into the boonies where I lived nor did using rabbit ears work. I wrote Barbara Boxer and Lois Capps about this situation and today I have broadcast stations on my satellite.

(39,961 posts)They've eliminated unlimited data plans, but those that still have them can continue using them. They tried to get me to switch when I got a new phone, and I said absolutely not.
