They had a outline of the steps they take to hire officers.The one that I was interested in was Step 6 of the hiring process ...The psychological evaluation. LAPD says they conduct "thorough" psychological exams that consists of written and oral test and interviews.You cannot have any conditions as well.All psychologicals are done by city psychologists .
Was Dorner crazy, just evil ,or did he just snap? The NRA wants everyone with mental health issues not to own a firearm. What do you do in situations when cops do this ...cops which obviously passed a psychological exam?

(16,350 posts)And things can happen post-testing. Looks like maybe that's the case this time. He had a LOT of anger and resentment, and not without some justification. Does not excuse what he did, but it sure looks like he may not have gone this route if the situation had been different. But who knows? I sure don't.
All I guess I'm saying is the PD can screen and still have ZERO guarantee of anyone's continued sanity or stability.

(50,953 posts)Likely only identifies problems when the candidate has been in an environment that pushes those to the limits earlier in life.
Then after they meet the qualifications and have been serving it may depend on the type of conflicts they have to deal with on a daily basis.

(18,402 posts)I briefly heard the former chief of LAPD say something about the exacting rules for hiring, but people who shouldn't have been hired being hired before those rules were all in place.
