"We should follow the example of a police officer named Brian Murphy. When a gunman opened fire on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, and Brian was the first to arrive, he did not consider his own safety. He fought back until help arrived, and ordered his fellow officers to protect the safety of the Americans worshiping inside even as he lay bleeding from twelve bullet wounds."
For you, sir...

(32,342 posts)I was glad Obama mentioned the Sikh temple shooting and Brian Murphy too. Thanks demmiblue.

(89,276 posts)heroes like him often don't see themselves as such and are surprised others view them in such a way.

(36,898 posts)Menchu Sanchez deserves the same applause (as well as every unnamed hero that gave above and beyond themselves during/after Hurricane Sandy).

(10,751 posts)It surprised me there was not more applause for him. Well anyway, not many people get called out by name during a SOTU so hopefully he still feels good about that. He certainly earned it, and then some!

(2,252 posts)...by Chris Cuomo of CNN (Can't embed it here, so you'll have to watch at this link):

I was moved by the coverage of Brian's presence at the State of the Union. His wife was, very obviously, very proud of the recognition Brian was receiving. However, the thought that came to my mind about Brian's emotional state was not so much that he overwhelmed by the applause, but that he was struggling with reliving the experience of the shooting, his near death, and his ongoing recovery...while in this very public setting. That's just how it struck me...
The video (which I found after reading this post) helped me a bit to understand Brian's personality and motivations. He does seem to be a very humble person. Someone who would be a great friend or coworker. Someone who doesn't easily accept his hero status. My impression of the SOTU may have been wrong.
Check out the video.
Thanks for the post, demmiblue.

(6,699 posts)I thought the same: He should get a good round of applause. But it was an awkward introduction, and just didn't lend itself to a moment of pause to allow that to happen. Unfortunate - but he is a hero, and we all know it. He should be proud, and he should be on a few talk shows to get his recognition that he deserves. Hell, maybe fox can have him on so he can "bash Obama" for not clapping for him??

(6,699 posts)I didn't see the asshole get any, or see him in the camera at all. I hope I'm not wrong on that one. What a miserable piece of human waste.

(1 post)You are absolutely right and I took notice of it immediately. There was no applause or standing ovation for Brian Murphy. Disgraceful!
