The way I see it, the decision's fine.
Let him go.
I think the greater disaster would be a person in a leadership positon compelled to remain there when his desires point somewhere else.
Sometimes, human misery doesn't discriminate.

Regular Catholics have been repreatedly asked to dig deep and help pay for legal costs and damages above their regular giving.

This even as they sell off real estate holdings and still face bankrkuptcy.

With increasing information detailing Ratzinger as the central Vatican official who actually kept all of the records and was actively involved in the cover up just starting to come out, it would be come virtually important to raise money from ordinary Catholics while the head guy in the cover up was still Pope.

Remember the Roberto Calvi affair in 1982? Calvi was found hanged under a bridge in London. There have been allegations ever since that "God's Banker" had ties to drug money and some shadowy secret societies.

And she was all like, "screw all that pressure and responsibility shit, you can make way more money selling your own brand and you won't have to give any of it to the Vatican. And the best thing is if people get all up in your face, you can tell them to go fuck themselves!"

Maybe he thinks the end time is near and he wants the final Pope to begin his reign. This way he has a chance of still being alive when Jesus returns. It would be a shame to miss it by just a few years

Pope Benedict XVI to resign, citing age and waning energy
By Anthony Faiola and Michelle Boorstein, Updated: Monday, February 11, 2013 11:32 AM

LONDON — Recognizing what he described as his failing strength of “mind and body,” Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would step down as head of the Catholic church, the first pontiff to give up his duties since 1415.

“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” Benedict said in a statement.

Federico Lombardi, director of the Vatican press office, said Benedict will move to the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo following his abdication on Feb. 28, then return to Rome to live in a monastery of cloistered nuns inside the Vatican for a period of prayer and reflection.

Pope Benedict 'complicit in child sex abuse scandals', say victims' groups

QUOTE:

For the legions of people whose childhoods and adult lives were wrecked by sexual and physical abuse at the hands of the Roman Catholic clergy, Pope Benedict XVI is an unloved pontiff who will not be missed.

Victims of the epidemic of sex- and child-abuse scandals that erupted under Benedict's papacy reacted bitterly to his resignation, either charging the outgoing pontiff with being directly complicit in a criminal conspiracy to cover up the thousands of paedophilia cases that have come to light over the past three years, or with failing to stand up to reactionary elements in the church resolved to keep the scandals under wraps.

Boom.
