Carnival Cruise Ship Triumph dead in the water off of Yucatan

Galveston, Texas — More than 4,000 people spent Sunday stranded on a cruise ship after a fire in the engine room, according to Carnival.

The Carnival Triumph, which left Galveston Thursday, is without propulsion and running on emergency generator power about 150 miles off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and a tug boat has been dispatched to the ship, according to a company statement.

The company reports that the ship's automatic fire extinguishing systems activated and only the aft engine room was damaged. No guests or crew members have reported injuries, according to the release.

Family of the stranded guests took to Twitter. Some prayed for a safe return while others complained about being unable to reach their loved ones. People who had bought tickets for future cruises on the Carnival Triumph worried about their own trips, some saying they were considering cancelling.

Guests have been asked to remain in the ship's public areas or on the open deck, and are being provided with food and drinks.

Strong currents and wind make for rough seas. I imagine the passengers are more than a bit uncomfortable.
