Attorneys ask for video, radio calls after mistaken identity police shooting in Torrance
The lawyers for a man whose truck was fired on by Torrance police in a case of mistaken identity have sent a letter to the city's police chief, asking for patrol car videos and radio transmissions recorded before the shooting.
Torrance police officers rammed the truck driven by David Perdue and fired at it early Thursday, just minutes after LAPD officers sent to protect a high-ranking police official fired by mistake at another truck nearby.
Police have said Perdue's pickup truck matched the description of the one belonging to murder suspect Christopher Dorner. The former LAPD officer is the subject of massive search after allegedly shooting three people to death.
But Perdue's pickup is not the same color or make as Dorner's.
Attorney Robert Sheahen, one of three lawyers representing Perdue, says his client looks nothing like Dorner.

(28,158 posts)I'd imagine a part of his settlement will be a request that they not be released to the public though.

(40,416 posts)Perdue and his lawyers should control the process.
The Torrence PD are, apparently, one fucked up LEA.

(28,158 posts)I'm guessing these three lawsuits they have pending are going to get gobs of money tossed at them to try and keep them quiet. I can't remember the LAPD getting this much national exposure on one of their "incidents" since maybe Rodney King? Can you think of one since then that has? I could well be forgetting something.

(51,666 posts)Los Angeles and Torrance are two separate municipalities. Neither one has a decent PD that serves the community, though.

(25,029 posts)It implies the cops were mostly wrong because they were so far off base.
Is it cool if they kill everyone that has a much more similar truck? Maybe everyone that more closely resembles the target? So, surely everyone of a reasonable fit for the combination?
The idea is that killing Dorner on sight is not only ok but encouraged, even if he does not present a clear and present threat is poison, when the process isn't respected the world becomes a far more dangerous place than even the most hardcore criminals can ever make it. Too much randomness and entropy is introduced at the great expense of trust and respect for the system from all sides. Weakness and corruption are weaved into any appraisal, especially when it is the most hardcore law and order types calling for the cowboy shit and the strong governance folks doing the winking, nodding, and defending as long as their guys are in charge.
This is the fruit of sliding off principle and winking an nodding at the idea of a street execution when they really want someone and the concept that many seem to operate under that accusation is guilt when the accusation is severe enough combined with mistaking rule of law for sympathy.
