For the past year, the Georgia Department of Labor has encouraged Georgia businesses to alert the agency if a job applicant fails a drug test, so that the department does not spend unemployment insurance on those who aren't really ready to work.
How many drug test failures have businesses reported? Just one, according to department spokesman Sam Hall.
"As a result of that one employer calling, we investigated and the person that had been reported was disallowed from continuing to receive benefits," Hall said.
For the past few years, concern that unemployed people are using drugs has been widespread among state business groups and Republican officeholders. Lawmakers in more than 30 states have pursued drug testing for people seeking unemployment or welfare benefits.

What a fucking waste of money these programs are. Hopefully people are waking up to the facts & realizing that what the media tells us about unemployed people & the actual facts are often times quite different.
Think if they had given that money to a hot breakfast program for school kids.

Wonder what the results would be if they started testing the state business groups and republican officeholders - these holier than thou, shareholders in the labs, bitter, little shits are way more corrupt than those they are accusing.

(5,810 posts)with the intent to catch those using drugs and make them ineligible for benefits. The deal was if they failed said test, then THEY had to pick up the tab for the test. If they passed the test, the state paid for it.
Long story short, people applying for welfare benefits apparently use drugs at a rate much lower than the general population. Go figure. Since they have so much disposable income. It wound up costing the state a bunch of money, too.
Ironically, Gov. Scott just "happened" to have a drug testing company that he signed over to his wife shortly after taking office. Any surprises there?
Some of us knew he was a crook before he got elected. The rest of the morons who voted for this un-incarcerated felon for our top elected state office are finding out just how much of a crook he is. Sad thing is that some of them would vote for him again because he is a Republican. You can't fix stupid.
