Sure, the archdiocese appears to have ignored reports of potential pedophile priests. And the Catholic church overall still hasnt fessed up to its crimes. And sure, some Catholic leaders blames the kids. And they some cardinals attack the victims outright. But who could possibly feel like theyre funding the sins of the church when they hand over money to an organization that has consistently lied and obstructed authorities from finding out the truth about the systematic rape of children?
I mean sure, theres that little issue of the Catholic church even being involved in modern-day slavery and holding firm on bigotry, but besides that, theyre really a great bunch of people once you get to know them, and hand them all your money so that they dont have to feel the pain of their sins.
Just because the LA archdiocese is still holding back on providing the full details of their decades of child rape doesnt mean that they havent learned any lessons from their severe failings. I mean, who hasnt helped to cover up rape, especially the rape of children?
Catholic priest in handcuffs pedophilia sex abuse child
Remind me again why anyone gives the Catholic church money these days for anything, let alone to help the church minimize the damage from its horrific sins on this matter?

This story goes well beyond just the religious viewpoint. This is criminal behavior, and they now want to get others to pay for it.

(5,756 posts)It's not like this is some one-off little parish that's not affiliated with any national or international organization. Not that I'd suggest giving any one-off organization or church donations to settle their sex-crimes civil suits either.
No, this is an Archdiocese of THE Catholic Church which aided and abetted the sex abuse crimes. If they have a lack of funds there are hundreds of thousands of their brethren in other Archdiocese they should turn to. Oh, and there is this whole big place in Rome called Vatican City. I'm pretty sure it's sitting on billions of its loyal follower's donated money, donated assets and billions in property and classical art.
The Archdiocese should seek funding from the Church to pay for what has been rather convincingly proven to be a conspiracy, worthy of RICO charges, by the Church to cover up the sex abuse and confound law enforcement and the courts in their efforts to get to the bottom of it.
I whole-heartedly agree with the statement: "Remind me again why anyone gives the Catholic church money these days for anything, let alone to help the church minimize the damage from its horrific sins on this matter?"

(14,061 posts)The archdiocese gets a cut of the collection plate, and people have no say in how the money is spent. So parishioners have been subsizing lawsuits and payouts and God knows what else for years. Meanwhile, individual parishes' finances are a nightmare...I've seen pleas in bulletins about the astronomical light bill...please help.
Now...for them to solicit funds to help pay for a situation they aided and abetted for decades...now that takes some balls. But rest assured, they'll raise some money from those still clueless folks who still blame the victims, see a huge conspiracy against the Church, and think all priests are Christ's little brothers.
One of the many reasons why I walked away from this "faith" years ago.

(5,756 posts)the poor and the elderly. I know what I'm about to say is a broad brush and is not representative of all the poor and elderly. That said.
As my title says they'll probably raise a lot of the donations on the backs of the poor and elderly. These groups, which tend to overlap somewhat, are often uninformed or misinformed because of lack of access to objective reporting. So they, in my opinion, have a higher likelihood of being duped by the archdiocese. I'm betting the nice older grandmothers who've been with the church forever will be giving to the archdiocese because the priests are really "such good men of God" and it's unlikely anything would stop them.
